Project/UnitDescription
The Test Engineering Division (TEN), part of the Electronic Systems Laboratory (ELSYS), specializes in applied research to advance Test and Evaluation (T&E) methodologies for Department of Defense (DoD) systems. With a core emphasis on Electronic Warfare (EW) and related technologies, TEN excels in developing sophisticated software-in-the-loop (SITL) and hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) test systems. These systems generate a realistic and complex electromagnetic spectrum consistent with the challenges of tomorrow s battlespace that facilitate open-loop and closed-loop testing, system simulation/emulation, test automation, and comprehensive data analysis.
Key research activities include T&E across the Radio Frequency (RF) and Electro-Optical/Infra-Red (EO/IR) spectrums, enabling high-fidelity testing of land, airborne, maritime, and spaceborne systems to ensure innovative solutions for diverse defense challenges.
The Systems Engineer oversees and coordinates the work of technical teams on systems projects, ensuring the successful design, implementation, operation, and technical management of those projects. Taking a holistic approach to systems engineering, the Systems Engineer ensures that all aspects of a system project are considered and addressed. The Systems Engineer works closely with stakeholders to understand their needs and then develops and documents technical requirements that meet those needs.
The Systems Engineer leads the design team in developing a system architecture that meets all of the requirements. After the system is designed, the Systems Engineer oversees the implementation of the system, working with the implementation team to ensure that it meets all of the requirements. Once the system is deployed, the Systems Engineer manages the technical aspects of the system, including monitoring performance, troubleshooting problems, and making improvements.
- Create product or system definitions and conduct initial requirements analysis
- Contribute to technical reports and diagrams detailing product or system attributes
- Analyze product or system functionality as defined by requirements
- Interface with and begin to work with disparate engineering teams for technical tasking
- Contribute to complete test system lifecycle from initial requirements and use case definition through design, prototyping, acceptance testing, delivery, and ongoing field support
- Develop and present design review materials to customers and internal stakeholders, maintaining active engagement throughout all project phases
Minimum Qualifications
- Experience with hardware system design, integration, or validation
- Active Secret Clearance
- Proficiency in CAD software (Solid Works, AutoCAD, or similar)
- Experience creating engineering design artifacts including drawings, specifications, models, and technical documentation
- Hands-on experience with prototype and product fabrication from concept through production
- Experience designing and/or executing hardware tests in laboratory environments
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with ability to distill complex technical concepts effectively for both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Problem-solving skills with ability to systematically diagnose and resolve complex technical issues across multiple disciplines
