Job Description

GTRI’s Cooperative Education (“co‑op”) program offers you extensive opportunities to participate in diverse scientific and technological endeavors, use state‑of‑the‑art equipment and rapidly improve your technical and leadership skills. The program allows you to alternate three semesters of full‑time work at GTRI with semesters of full‑time school.

GTRI’s mechanical engineering group within the Aerospace, Transportation, and Advanced Systems Laboratory (ATAS) seeks co‑op students with interests in mechanical design and development and working on large‑scale mechanical prototypes. Students will have the opportunity to gain hands‑on experience in the following areas:

  • Designing, developing, and documenting designs for use in DOD applications.
  • Mechanical design & analysis
  • Machining, 3D‑Printing, sheet metal bending, and other manufacturing processes.
  • Building assemblies and integrating subsystems.
  • Part finishing processes (conversion coating, anodizing, painting, etc.)
  • Student will use Solid Works and other design tools to create parts, assemblies, and drawings.
  • Develop hands‑on engineering skills while helping the team coordinate assembly and testing of large prototype systems.
  • Tolerance Analysis
  • Logistical Support

Minimum Qualifications

Co‑op

  • Pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA
  • Must be eligible to be approved by your college/university to participate in a co‑op program and register for co‑op credit with your university during work terms
  • Must be able to complete at least three full‑time co‑op terms (alternating three terms of full‑time work at GTRI with semesters of full‑time school) prior to graduation
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience using Solid Works
  • Strong math skills and ability to learn complex engineering concepts
  • Some hands‑on/fabrication experience
  • Configuration management tools
  • Ability to clearly communicate technical ideas and concepts
