Pay begins at $15.70/hr for Outdoor Recreation Assistant and is dependent upon applicable experience.
This is a SEASONAL position running April 30th - October 8th and is not eligible for benefits however this position is eligible for any market adjustments approved in the annual budget.
DescriptionThis classification is responsible for assisting with the Paddle Adventures Watercraft Rental program and communicating the fundamentals and safety of watercraft sports within the Parks and Recreation department. Duties and responsibilities include instruction, facilitation, and evaluation of paddling/boating equipment and public programs. This person is responsible for the safe transportation of equipment, safe utilization of gear/elements, and the safety and well‑being of participants.
Under general supervision, reports to Outdoor Recreation & Program Coordinator and SOAC Manager.
The following duties are normal for this position. The omission of specific statements of the duties does not exclude them from the classification if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification. While this is intended to be an accurate reflection of the current job, management reserves the right to revise the job. Other duties may be required and assigned.
- Assist with opening and closing Paddle Adventures Storefront; answers telephone calls and greets visitors.
- Operates the cash register; accepts and processes payment of Paddle Adventures rentals and programs; performs daily balances and reports any discrepancies immediately to supervisor.
- Assist in program rentals, public programs, and event offerings to the general public.
- Assist with group reservations and group orientation of safety practices.
- Be able to and/or willing to become trained in transporting boating equipment and driving a canoe/kayak trailer.
- Be able to and/or willing to become trained in safe fishing, boating and paddling skills on flat water and river water.
- Provides information/assistance to customers regarding facility services and program activities, procedures, fees, or other issues; distributes forms/documentation as requested.
- Responds to routine questions, complaints or requests for service; initiates problem resolution.
- Operates a computer to enter, retrieve, review or modify data; performs data entry functions by keying data into computer; verifies accuracy of entered data and makes corrections; utilizes word processing, spreadsheet, database, email, or other programs.
- Keeps routine records and inventory equipment before and after a rental.
- Works safely observing all OSHA, Federal, State, and City regulations. Reports any accidents immediately to supervisor.
- Correctly wears and demonstrates to guests the appropriate personal protective and safety equipment (PFDs) as required.
- Perform routine maintenance on equipment. Report any malfunctioning equipment to Outdoor Recreation & Program Coordinator.
- Conducts behavior at all times in a professional manner to reflect positively on customer’s perception of town facility.
- Helps maintain the cleanliness of watercraft equipment, work area and facility. Reports incidents, or malfunctioning equipment to supervisor.
- May occasionally assist with facilitation and monitoring of independent recreation usage in Adventure Zones; works safely, observing all OSHA, Federal, State, and City regulations; reports any accidents immediately to supervisor; administers CPR and first aid until qualified medical personnel arrives, if necessary.
- Assists the Outdoor Recreation and Program Coordinator throughout the week and weekend
- Provides coverage in the absence of other personnel
- Promotes team-oriented environment; assists co-workers when necessary
- Conducts behavior in a professional manner to reflect positively on customer and staff's perception of SOAC facility.
- Assists with special events and programs conducted by Smyrna Parks and Town of Smyrna
- Performs any other duties as assigned by supervisor.
- Be at least 18 years of age
- Possess a valid Tennessee Driver’s License
- Available and willing to work up to 40 hours each week, including evenings, most weekends, and some holiday
- Be comfortable working at height of 20 or more feet
- Current CPR/AED certification or willingness to obtain certification within 30 days of employment
- Must be able to operate a truck with trailer
- Must be able to operate non-motorized watercraft
- Be able to learn belay and rope safety techniques (properly fit climbing equipment on guests and familiarize them to the safety equipment they will be using, conducts safety demonstrations for guests (physically climb the rock wall), provide and document daily inspections of the climbing course and safety equipment)
Data Utilization: Requires the ability to work with large amounts of data to include knowledge of parks and facilities locations, contents, and users. May also require ability to perform subsequent actions in relation to computational procedures.
