Responsibilities
- Operate all types of equipment to perform all safety functions, including, but not limited to, operating manual transmission, chaining tires, etc., and drive in all types of terrain, routes, and environmental conditions.
- Safely operate a tractor/trailer in the transportation of freight in accordance with Company, Federal, State, and Local laws with regard to run times and FMCSA regulations.
- Adhere to all FMCSA requirements applicable to holders of a Commercial Driver’s License.
- Maintain records required with compliance with local, state, and federal regulations.
- Comply with all requirements for safe and legal transportation of hazardous materials.
- Ensure the security of equipment and cargo.
- Conduct pre‑trip and post‑trip inspections to ensure safe working conditions of the tractor and trailer prior to each trip and at the end of each trip.
- Check gauges and visual indicators for malfunctions, ensure seal or lock on trailers, and conduct inspections of vehicles before and during trips to determine problems that may be occurring.
- Promptly report all maintenance problems to Fleet Services and/or supervision.
- Verify unit numbers versus paperwork given and report any discrepancies to your supervisor.
- Use in‑cab technology, including electronic logs and other items, as required.
- Work varying schedules and dock work based on business needs.
- When approved by Safety, run over‑the‑road trips as dictated by business needs.
- Provide professional and courteous service to customers and the general public.
- Assist where needed on dock duties such as loading/unloading freight and over‑the‑road runs.
- Maintain regular attendance.
- Perform any other duties as assigned to meet operational, safety, and other needs.
- High School Diploma or General Educational Degree (GED), or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 21 years of age required per FMCSA regulations; 1 year driving experience required.
- Valid Class A Commercial Driver’s License.
- Registered with the FMCSA Drug and Alcohol Clearinghouse.
- Reside within 75 miles of the domiciled Service Center and/or work assignment.
- Haz Mat, Tanker, and Doubles endorsements required (LCV requirements may apply).
- Conform to FMCSA requirements for driving a tractor‑trailer for required periods.
- Stable employment history preferred.
- Ability to operate a forklift (minimum 7,500 lb. vehicle).
- Can push or pull a loaded pallet jack or hand truck with a minimum load of 70 lb.
- Physical activities include standing, lifting, twisting, turning, climbing a ladder, etc.
- Can drop/hook and couple trailers, crank landing gear, pull a 5th‑wheel pin (~65 lb.), and maneuver a trailer dolly.
- Can provide an acceptable MVR.
- Familiar with state motor vehicle laws and FMCSA rules and regulations.
- Pass FMCSA‑required medical exam and road test.
- Ability to speak and read English.
- Can lift approximately 70 lb. or more if required by essential functions.
- Can drive all routes and in all types of terrain, including mountains, steep inclined roads, curvy highways, desert areas, bridges, tunnels, etc.
- Can drive in a wide range of environmental conditions (rain, wind, snow, freezing temperatures, hot weather, etc.).
- Can operate all safety and operational functions of equipment, including chaining tires, driving manual or automatic transmission vehicles, etc.
- Complies with all company policies, rules, procedures, and Code of Conduct.
- Interacts well with others and can work independently or in a team setting.
- Can work under tight time constraints in a high‑volume environment with multiple priorities.
- Responds well to questions; can read, interpret, and comply with written information and documents such as safety rules, operations/procedure manuals, and maintenance instructions with high comprehension and concentration.
- Passes a pre‑employment drug screen, random drug and/or alcohol tests, and a criminal history background check.
- Authorized to work in the United States.
