Job Title
Flagger 1 (Flagger) – FLSA:
Non-Exempt
Performs a variety of work related to safety during the maintenance and construction of county roads. Primarily controls traffic for road work so as to ensure the safety of both the work crew and the public. Operates in outdoor settings, often exposed to inclement weather and traffic hazards, with a focus on clear communication and adherence to established procedures.
Essential Functions- Ensures proper control of traffic through the work zone to safeguard both workers and the traveling public, providing instruction to drivers and communicating with other workers and flaggers throughout the day.
- Collects, places, and maintains traffic control signs and devices, ensuring they are in good condition and positioned at appropriate distances.
- Adjusts signage as needed during the project to maintain compliance with safety regulations.
- Establishes warning signs for upcoming road hazards and ensures their removal at project completion.
- Serves on call for off‑hours or overtime work and performs all other duties as assigned.
- Current flagger certification and flagger certification card.
- Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a dependable vehicle.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred; not required.
- State certification for traffic control and a current driver’s license with a good driving record.
- Ability to read, understand, and use traffic control signs, maps, and written, oral, or diagram instructions.
- Proof of ability to perform physical tasks such as standing for long periods, bending, stooping, reaching, lifting up to 50 lb, and moving rapidly to avoid danger.
- Strong communication skills, ability to work as part of a team, and ability to handle stressful or emergency situations.
- Basic computer operation knowledge.
- No experience required beyond a current flagger card; prior experience with utility locating, paving, loader operation, dump truck operation, backhoe operation, grader operation, or other heavy equipment operations is preferred.
- Experience in building and dismantling traffic control setups efficiently.
- Familiarity with front loader truck operations is a plus.
Hourly pay scale: $20.50 – $25.00.
Working ConditionsWork is performed outdoors, frequently exposed to inclement weather, traffic hazards, and repetitive physical activity. Requires continual standing, lifting, and communication with the crew and public.
