Job Description
As a member of the civil engineering design team at Puget Sound Energy, you will contribute to vital projects that power our communities and support the escalating demand for green energy across Western Washington, all while growing your expertise and advancing your career as a Civil Engineer III.
This position requires considerable experience developing civil permit and construction drawings for land development associated with new and existing substations. Experience with grading plans, storm drainage, erosion control, and other civil-related elements is required. A working understanding of state and local stormwater regulations, building codes, and industry standards is essential. The successful candidate should demonstrate strong experience in civil calculations, reports, technical specifications, cost estimates, and support the permitting and construction phases of projects.
Communication skills—both verbal and written—are desirable. Basic understanding of electrical substation assembly and safe design practices is a plus.
The engineer should possess a broad range of experience, expertise, and/or understanding of civil and structural engineering topics related to substation design and construction. Solutions will typically involve complex issues, requiring interpretation of requirements, application of advanced analytical techniques, and non‑standard solutions. Candidates should be flexible to deal with shifting budgets and priorities, resilient to adapt to changes, and possess a positive, synergistic personality.

This job is considered "safety sensitive" as defined in RCW 49.44.240 and is subject to a pre‑employment drug screening that includes screening for the presence of marijuana and marijuana metabolites.
Job Responsibilities- Interprets and/or modifies available guidelines for application to existing problems or processes.
- Prepares complex designs, standards, studies and analyses.
- Provides a detailed design review of internal or external technical documents.
- Prepares cost estimates and evaluations for project alternatives with minimal supervision.
- Plans and develops project budgets with appropriate documentation.
- Ensures compliance with codes, standards, and design, operation, and maintenance requirements.
- Identifies potential areas of weakness with assigned work, and initiates corrective action.
- Documents and shares work with others to strengthen the depth and breadth of skills within the department's engineering workforce.
- Ensures that problem solutions are tailored to PSE's business environment.
- Supports emergency response work as requested, including immediate and extended restoration efforts driven by weather and other system failures.
- May lead or coordinate the work of junior engineers, engineering assistants, field technicians, and others who assist on specific projects (including contractor/consultants).
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Bachelor of Science degree or PE license in electrical, mechanical, civil or another appropriate engineering field.
- Substantial experience in planning, design, specification preparation, technical field work, project cost estimating and scheduling (typically achieved after 5 or more years practice as a degreed engineer).
- Demonstrated organization, documentation, prioritization, and project management skills.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Experience working in the utility industry.
- Familiarity with codes and equipment utilized in the design and operation of utility systems.
- Possession of a Professional Engineering license.
- Knowledge of engineering economics and utility accounting practices.
- Experience working on complex engineering projects.
