The Payroll Technician performs a variety of technical payroll functions to ensure accurate and timely compensation for employees. This position is responsible for processing timesheets, interpreting collective bargaining agreements (CBAs), applying appropriate budget codes, and resolving payroll discrepancies. The Payroll Technician serves as a key support role within the Payroll Department and regularly communicates with employees regarding payroll-related questions or corrections.
QualificationsRequired
- Demonstrated effective oral and written communication in the English language,
including correct grammar and spelling usage. - Demonstrated knowledge of and practical experience with computer software including:
database, word processing, presentation, and email applications. - Possess a strong attention to detail, time management, organizational and multi-tasking
skills coupled with the ability to work independently. - Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Legally eligible to work for any employer in the United States of America as verified by
Form I-9. - Successful Washington State Patrol and Federal Bureau of Investigation fingerprint
clearance.
- Demonstrated knowledge of WSIPC and Skyward Human Resources and Payroll modules.
- Experience reading and interpreting collective bargaining agreements and state and
federal law. - Experience with employee payroll, health insurance and retirement administration in a
public school, higher education system or municipality. - Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance or business administration from an accredited
college or university.
- Processes and reviews employee timesheets for accuracy, completeness, and compliance
with applicable policies, procedures, and collective bargaining agreements (CBAs). - Reads, interprets, and applies provisions of multiple CBAs, employee contracts, and
payroll regulations to ensure correct pay, leave accruals, and deductions. - Verifies and applies appropriate budget and account codes to payroll transactions in
accordance with district financial practices. - Identifies payroll discrepancies, missing information, or errors; communicates directly
with employees, supervisors, and administrators to obtain corrections or clarification. - Enters payroll data into the payroll system accurately and within established deadlines.
- Supports payroll processing cycles (regular, supplemental, retroactive, and adjustments)
to ensure timely payroll distribution. - Responds to employee inquiries regarding timesheets, pay calculations, leave balances,
and payroll procedures in a professional and confidential manner. - Assists with payroll audits, reconciliations, and reporting as requested.
- Maintains confidentiality of payroll, personnel, and financial information.
- Provides administrative and technical support to Payroll Department staff as needed.
- Maintains accurate payroll records in compliance with district, state, and federal
requirements. - Perform related duties as assigned to support departmental operations.
