OBJECTIVE
SUMMARY:
The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for identifying patient needs and priorities for care through assessment, planning for and delegating care based on patient needs, executing therapeutic physician or nurse-initiated interventions, and evaluating the patient's response to care and progress towards outcomes. Whenever possible, the family or those significant to the family are considered as part of the assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation efforts of the RN.
When care is not provided directly by the RN, the RN assigns/delegates care to other qualified members of the health care team. The RN coordinates care between other professional disciplines as needed. Through documentation and verbal communication, essential information is shared with health care team members. Unit-based activities which contribute to a positive work and professional environment are performed.
- Accurately triages patients using the Emergency Severity Index (ESI).
- Initiates and documents accurate and ongoing assessment and re-assessment of physical, psychologic, and social problems of patients within the emergency care setting.
- Collects key information from patient, family, laboratory, and other medical reports.
- Analyzes assessment data to identify patient problems.
- Performs therapeutic nursing interventions consistent with nursing division policies and procedures, demonstrated competencies, and with consideration given to risk management and infection control practices.
- Follows BLS, ACLS, and TNCC protocols.
- Is knowledgeable in arrhythmia detection and treatment.
- Initiates pain management measures according to policies, protocols, and physician orders.
- Is knowledgeable in crisis intervention.
- Identifies expected outcomes individualized to the emergency patient based on the patient's assessment, identified problems, and cultural diversity.
- Formulates and implements a plan of care for the emergency patient based on assessment, patient problems, and expected outcomes.
- Evaluates and modifies the plan of care based on observable patient responses and attainment of expected outcomes.
- Adheres to established standards of emergency nursing practice, including behaviors that characterize professional status.
- Provides care based on philosophical and ethical concepts. These concepts include reverence for life; respect for the inherent dignity, worth, autonomy, and individuality of each human being; and acknowledging the beliefs of other people.
- Ensures open and timely communication with emergency patients, significant others, and other health care providers through professional collaboration.
- Collaborates with other health care providers to deliver patient-centered care in a manner consistent with safe, efficient, and cost-effective use of resources.
- Demonstrates ability to manage the care of patients with conditions common to the unit.
- Maintains confidentiality in matters relating to patient/family.
- Interacts with patients/families with a variety of developmental and sociocultural backgrounds.
- Provides information to patients and families which reduces anxiety and conveys an attitude of acceptance, sensitivity, and caring.
