Overview
Instrument technician responsible for calibrating and maintaining instrumentation control systems and automation systems, including process control, safety shutdown, fire detection and suppression, gas detection, and emergency shutdown. Provide input to optimize systems, maintain regulatory records, and assess, maintain, repair and monitor control, analytical, and distributed control systems. Maintain performance of temperature, pressure, flow and level measurement equipment, valves, hydraulic control panels and single loop controllers.
On-call and emergency response duties, housekeeping, and general maintenance as required. Strong electrical and mechanical aptitude required.
- Ensure instrumentation control systems and automation systems are calibrated and functioning properly. Maintain all facility instrumentation, measurement devices, and final control elements. Work with facility engineers to optimize systems and maintain regulatory requirements and records. Assess, maintain, repair and monitor control, analytical, and distributed control systems. Maintain performance of temperature, pressure, flow and level measurement equipment, valves, hydraulic control panels and single loop controllers.
Respond to on-call emergencies as scheduled. Perform housekeeping and general maintenance. Carry out other duties as trained and instructed by supervision. - Manage spare/critical parts inventory to reduce delays or failures.
- Properly record and complete I&E maintenance reports and service records.
- Maintain a clean work space across all areas of responsibility including structures, offices, restrooms, break rooms, vehicles, etc.
- Maintain open communication with operators, supervision, and managers via radio and other proper means.
- Complete maintenance inspections, checklists, and PMs.
- Participate in Process Safety Management with emphasis on Instrument and Electrical integrity.
- Engage in safety and environmental training and attend daily briefings.
- Observe company safety and operational procedures and policies; promptly report unsafe conditions to management.
- Use mechanical, measuring & testing devices, hand tools, computers, and other equipment; drive company vehicles. Climb tank stairs, operate valves, lift 40–50 lbs regularly and up to 100 lbs occasionally, and perform other physical activities.
- Use computer/motor controlled equipment and/or manually operate valves throughout the process area.
- Provide HAZWOPER and Resource Conservation and Recovery Act support and participate in emergency response activities.
- Drive company vehicle to work sites away from base location.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- Successful completion of broad I&E maintenance tasks.
- Maintain asset safety and compliance with regulations and corporate policies.
- Mentor fellow employees when possible.
- Participate in project planning including P&t, Cause & Effect development, and Control System design.
- Maintain and optimize SCADA communications systems and PLCs/DCSs.
- Troubleshoot using P&IDs and loop diagrams.
- Calibrate, test, inspect, operate, troubleshoot and maintain electronic devices (PLCs, DCSs, transmitters, etc.).
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office applications.
- Work independently, as a team leader, or as a team member within the maintenance group.
- Oversee on-site contractors and ensure competency, safety, and productivity.
- Maintain and update system documentation including loop diagrams, panel drawings and control documents.
- Assist in developing I&E maintenance procedures and annual budgets.
- Implement and enhance preventative maintenance programs.
- Optimize company and contractor resources and personnel.
- Maintain an approved contractor list.
- Analyze purchases and invoices and identify improvements.
- Handle regulatory issues as required.
- Evaluate company and contractor safety practices and performance.
- Carry a cell phone and be available during working and non-working hours as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Petroleum transportation, storage and distribution; electrical or mechanical experience is a plus.
