Description
The El Defensor Chieftainis looking for a curious, driven, and community-minded Reporter who is passionate about uncovering meaningful stories, building relationships, and delivering accurate, engaging journalism that keeps our readers informed.
If you're energized by meeting new people, asking thoughtful questions, covering everything from community events to local sports, and making a real impact through your work, we'd love to hear from you.
Responsibilities- Report, write, and photograph for weekly assignments.
- Collect, verify, and analyze newsworthy information.
- Investigate leads, interview sources, and conduct thorough research.
- Write clear, engaging, and accurate news stories for publication.
- Publish articles using a content management system.
- Adhere to journalism ethics and industry standards.
- Attend and cover local events, writing captions and brief recaps when needed.
- Assist editorial staff with proofreading and fact-checking.
- Stay informed on current events and community issues.
- Collaborate with editors, reporters, and photographers.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Editor.
- 2+ years of Journalismexperience required.
- Strong writing, research, and interviewing skills.
- Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
- Ability and Knowledge to accurately cover a variety of local sports events.
- Basic photography skills.
- Experience with content management systems preferred.
- Familiarity with AP style and journalism best practices.
- Willingness to cover local eventsoutside regular hours.
- Must be located in Socorro, NM, or the surrounding area for local in-person coverage.
