The Youth Engagement Coordinator position will be held by a highly motivated self-starter who will recruit, coordinate, and lead tobacco control youth action teams for the ATFC-DOS is Delaware, Otsego, and Schoharie counties. This position reports directly to the Director of the ATFC-DOS and will work in collaboration with the ATFC-DOS Community Engagement Coordinator.
The primary function of this position is to engage, train and mobilize youth (ages 13-18) to bring about positive community changes to improve public health. The successful candidate will engage and mobilize youth to be active participants in the policy and community change process through data collection, community and decision maker education, and media engagement.
EssentialJob Responsibilities Youth Recruitment
- Develop and maintain connections with youth-based organizations and area schools in an effort to recruit youth participation in all local and statewide tobacco control initiatives.
- Regularly provide educational presentations on the impact of tobacco marketing, promotion, secondhand smoke exposure and tobacco product waste and the environment to community youth groups and schools.
- Provide training and technical assistance to youth to empower and build their capacity to educate and motivate community members and community leaders to support the tobacco free norm.
- Provide youth education around the deceptive marketing tactics of the tobacco industry, the health inequities related to tobacco use and secondhand smoke exposure, and how community-based tobacco control policy change can result in a healthier community.
- Increase youth knowledge and skills around public speaking, conducting interviews, persuasive writing and youth leadership.
- Hold regular Reality Check youth meetings to plan and implement youth lead events for community and decision maker education, youth advocacy and earned media opportunities.
- Plan youth participation in local events for tobacco control related days including World No Tobacco Day, Seen Enough Tobacco Day, Great American Smoke-Out and Take Down Tobacco Day.
- Participate in the planning and hosting of annual statewide Youth Summit.
- Participate in annual meetings with State Legislators to educate on the value of local tobacco control programs.
- Attend regional and statewide meetings and trainings as required by NYSDOH Bureau of Tobacco Control.
- Complete all reporting in a timely and accurate manner.
- Complete all required trainings and educational webinars for St. Joseph’s Health in a timely and accurate manner.
- Maintain accurate records and permissions for all youth activities.
- Bachelor’s degree
- Experience working with youth
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation skills
- Excellent organizational, leadership and relationship building skills.
- Reliable transportation and a valid NYS license
- Occasional evening and weekend hours; local travel and infrequent overnight stays
- Master’s degree preferred.
- Proficiency with social media
- Knowledge of and/or experience in public health and tobacco control
- Experience with public policy work
- Experience working with youth and youth-based organizations.
