Must-Have: BLS must be completed through a recognized provider

Description:

Floating between departments and/or local locations within 20 miles is required.

Antepartum responsibilities include assessing all triage patients over 20 weeks.

Utilizing obstetric triage acuity tools is essential.

Labor assessment and evaluation are part of the role.

Fetal evaluation and assessment are required.

Evaluations for labor at term, signs of preterm labor, symptoms of preeclampsia, rupture of membranes, decreased fetal movement, preterm premature rupture of membranes, vaginal bleeding, and acute or critical conditions must be conducted.

If an emergency medical condition is determined to exist, the nurse must stabilize the patient for delivery or transfer to a higher level of care if needed.

Intrapartum duties include labor assessment, evaluation, and care.

Fetal evaluation and assessment must be performed.

The nurse is responsible for preparing the expectant mother for safe delivery.

Administration of medications including but not limited to Pitocin, misoprostol, methergine, hemabate, magnesium sulfate, terbutaline, labetalol, nifedipine, hydralazine, and insulin is required.

Immediate stabilization of the newborn is also part of the responsibilities.

Newborn medications must be administered.

Preparation for scheduled or emergency cesarean delivery is required.

Postpartum responsibilities include assessment and care of postpartum patients (both vaginal and cesarean deliveries) and newborns.

Newborn care includes but is not limited to hearing screening, assisting with laboratory draws, IV starts and care, medication administration (hep B, vitamin K, erythromycin, antibiotics), assisting with circumcisions, care of opiate withdrawal newborns, stabilization of critically ill newborns for transport, phototherapy, and care for hypoglycemia.
