Earth Scope Consortium seeks an Engineer II to advance community-driven earth science research. In this role, you will design, develop, and optimize systems, software tools, and instrumentation that support geophysical and geological data collection and analysis. Working closely with scientists and engineers, you will build scalable data pipelines, integrate diverse sensors and data sources, and ensure reliability and performance of research infrastructure.
You will contribute to documentation, proposals, and collaborative projects while working in a culture that values innovation, open science, and societal impact.
Responsibilities
- Design, test, and improve geophysical and geological data systems that support Earth
- Scope research programs
- Develop and maintain software tools and workflows for large-scale earth science data collection and analysis
- Collaborate with scientists and engineers to translate research needs into robust technical solutions
- Implement quality assurance, documentation, and version control for engineering deliverables
- Support deployment, monitoring, and troubleshooting of field and observatory-based instrumentation
- Analyze system performance and recommend enhancements for scalability and reliability
- Integrate data from multiple sensors, platforms, and repositories into unified workflows
- Contribute to technical reports, proposals, and community documentation
- Ensure adherence to engineering best practices, security standards, and data governance policies
- Mentor junior staff and contribute to cross-functional project planning
Required Skills
- Geophysical or geological data analysis
- Python or similar scientific programming languages
- Data pipeline development (ETL)
- Database design and management (SQL/No
- SQL)
- Linux environment and shell scripting
- Cloud computing platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure)
- Version control with Git
- Systems and instrumentation integration
- Data visualization and reporting tools
- Technical documentation and requirements gathering
