The School-Based Sign Language Interpreter facilitates communication between Deaf and Hard of Hearing students and their teachers, peers, and other school personnel. The interpreter provides accurate and effective interpretation services in educational settings to ensure students have equal access to instructional content, school activities, and educational opportunities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide sign language interpretation services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students during classroom instruction and school-related activities.
  • Interpret spoken language into American Sign Language (ASL) and/or other communication modes as specified in the student's Individualized Education Program (IEP).
  • Voice interpret student communication for teachers, staff, and peers when appropriate.
  • Assist students in accessing academic instruction, discussions, multimedia presentations, assemblies, field trips, and extracurricular activities.
  • Collaborate with teachers, special education staff, administrators, and related service providers to support student success.
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation as required by district and state guidelines.
  • Participate in IEP meetings and educational team meetings when requested.
  • Support students  social interactions and communication within the school environment while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding student information in accordance with FERPA and district policies.
  • Adhere to professional standards and ethical guidelines established by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) and applicable state requirements.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required;
    Associate s or Bachelor s degree preferred.
  • Valid state-required interpreter credential, license, approval, or certification.
  • Proficiency in American Sign Language (ASL).
  • Ability to accurately interpret educational content across a variety of academic subjects.
  • Knowledge of Deaf culture and best practices for supporting Deaf and Hard of Hearing students.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively as a member of a multidisciplinary educational team.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience interpreting in a K–12 educational setting.
  • RID Certification, EIPA score meeting state requirements, or other applicable credentials.
  • Experience working with students receiving special education services.
  • Familiarity with IEPs and educational accommodations.
