HOUSING CASE MANAGER I Position Summary

Supports the administration of low-income housing program case management with an independent case load. This position offers an opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the community by ensuring access to essential housing resources for those in need.

OVERVIEW

This position is part of a dynamic team committed to providing Alaskan’s access to safe, quality, affordable housing. The ideal candidate will possess competencies to analyze and assess housing programs related to the Housing Choice Voucher programs. As a case manager, this position is responsible for on-going client centered housing support to ensure housing criteria are met .

The ideal candidate must be able to think independently , assess family scenarios within the confines of housing regulations , convey accurate information, and maintain the utmost professionalism when communicating both favorable and unfavorable messages.

The Housing Case Manager I serves as an entry level case manager, work which is typically characterized by oversight of a smaller client case load. This role is distinguished from the Housing Case Manager II by the latter’s responsibility to independently perform the full scope of affordable housing case management and application of detailed policies and procedures

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
1. Client Interactions
  • Communicates housing program requirements to individuals/groups effectively and in easy-to-understand terms.
  • Interacts with a diverse social economic population and a wide array of external agencies .
  • Provides information on grievance procedures or fair hearings ;
  • Offers appropriate community resource referrals .
2. Program Compliance
  • Carry out program duties in alignment with all applicable housing regulations , policies and procedures related , but not limited to:
  • Civil and Disability rights;
  • Rental integrity;
  • Data privacy laws .
3. Day-to-day program operations
  • Oversees Housing Choice Voucher and assigned referral program client files
  • Informs owners of program requirements including HUD inspection standards
  • Completes accurate adjustments to rent computations in compliance rental standards.
  • May conduct inspections of private units and document results.
  • Works closely with unit inspector to coordinate inspections.
  • Document all actions (i.e. income, asset and family data) accurately in electronic client record using housing management software. Ensures all information entered in electronic client files agree with the supporting documentation.
  • May collect data on private, unassisted units to maintain a database of comparable units as needed.

Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of

Microsoft office products, web-based training tools, p roficiency in business English and mathematics; effective communication techniques, k nowledge of regulations governing assisted housing programs. Reasonable knowledge of the community, social & economic resources available

Skills in

Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills , effective time management and organizational skills; perform detailed mathematical computations; and proficient interviewing techniques. The employee identifies work that needs to be done, prioritizes, coordinates efforts and performs the tasks. Frequently required to exercise personal judgment in making decisions in completing assignments .
