Job Description

This position is responsible for recovering and delivering freight of all kinds within a local area and in some outlying areas. Job entails loading and off-loading freight from company equipment using manual pallet jacks, hand trucks, lift-gates and dock plates and forklifts. Must be able to operate and navigate company vehicles and equipment safely and competently, abiding by all federal, state and local laws and regulations.

Tasks will be assigned through radio dispatch, cell phones and routed through the dispatch office. Responsibilities include accurate accounting of every shipment through thorough and precise documentation. A professional and courteous attitude towards coworkers & customers must be presented at all times.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform daily pre-trip inspection to verify vehicle is in safe working condition. Report all vehicle deficiencies to the maintenance department. Do not operate any vehicle with a serious safety defect.
  • Operate company vehicle in a safe and responsible manner. Obey all traffic laws.
  • Verify that bills of lading exist for every shipment and that all information on the BOL is complete and accurate and signed by the shipper.
  • Route, load and deliver all freight as assigned. Accept radio and cell phone dispatches for additional pickups, deliveries and routing instructions.
  • Account for each shipment by verifying piece count, weight, and condition of freight. Note exceptions when appropriate. Verify complete billing information is listed on each shipping document.
  • Record accurate date and time of each delivery. Obtain legible signature from the customer that accepts each shipment.
  • Submit paperwork for every shipment to the main office on a daily basis.
  • Secure freight in trailer or on flatbed to avoid damage to freight and possible injury to others.
  • Thoroughly pre-trip each trailer that is assigned for daily outbound. Verify that equipment is fully operational, roadworthy and appropriate for the load. That includes operational status and adequate fuel levels of refrigeration units.
  • When required, collect payments from customers at the time of pickup or delivery. Verify accuracy of payment and promptly submit funds to the accounting department.
  • Verify security of freight from theft or vandalism. Maintain secure chain of custody for each shipment in your care.
  • Keep accurate driver log when driving beyond 100 miles from base.
  • Accurately communicate with dispatch regarding location of staged equipment.
  • Ensure hazardous materials are appropriately declared and placards are applied when necessary.
Other Driving Functions
  • Maintain a safe and clean work vehicle.
  • Keep vehicle sufficiently fueled.
  • Exercise safe and responsible use of company equipment.
  • Immediately report all accidents and damages to equipment to your supervisor.
  • Exposure to outside environmental conditions and physically strenuous conditions are part of the job. Keep all safety gear and appropriate protective clothing available at all times to prevent potential exposure to injury.
  • Maintain a courteous and professional demeanor when interacting with customers and co-workers.
  • Maintain a valid driver’s license, current Medical card and any other license or certification required for the job.
  • Assist in general warehouse and maintenance duties.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Operations
  • Accurately document hours worked using the time clock and driver lunch list.
  • Be aware of potential hazards in the work environment and comply all safety standards.
  • Conduct yourself in a manner appropriate for the workplace.
  • Follow established policies and procedures whether written or verbal. An Employee handbook will be provided.
Qualifications and Skill Requirements
  • High school graduate or equivalent.
  • Driving experience preferred.
  • Strong people skills and excellent customer service skills. Must work well with others and on an individual basis.
  • Detail oriented with strong organization, multi-tasking and time management skills.
  • Must possess a valid Class A commercial driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Current Medical Card.
  • Haz Mat Endorsement required.
  • Doubles Certification preferred.
  • Successful completion of a drug screen and background check.
