Certified Nurse Midwife

Part-time Regular SMC, Soledad, CA, US

About the Role

The Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) plays a critical role in providing comprehensive healthcare to women throughout their lifespan, with a particular focus on pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum care. This position involves delivering personalized, evidence-based care that supports the physical and emotional well-being of patients, ensuring safe and positive birth experiences. The CNM collaborates closely with obstetricians, pediatricians, and other healthcare professionals to manage both routine and high-risk pregnancies, while also offering family planning, gynecological, and primary care services.

By educating patients and their families, the CNM empowers women to make informed decisions about their reproductive health and wellness. Ultimately, the role contributes to improving maternal and neonatal outcomes through compassionate, skilled, and culturally sensitive care.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Current certification as a Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) by the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB).
  • Active and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice within the United States.
  • Master’s degree in Nurse‑Midwifery or a related advanced nursing program accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education (ACME).
  • Demonstrated clinical experience in prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum care.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certifications.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working in diverse healthcare settings including hospitals, birthing centers, and community clinics.
  • Additional certifications such as Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) or certification in lactation consulting.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and telehealth platforms.
  • Strong background in patient education and community outreach programs.
  • Bilingual abilities or experience working with culturally diverse populations.
Responsibilities
  • Provide prenatal, labor, delivery, and postpartum care to women, ensuring adherence to best practices and safety protocols.
  • Conduct comprehensive gynecological exams, including family planning, contraceptive counseling, and routine health screenings.
  • Monitor fetal development and maternal health, identifying and managing any complications or high-risk conditions in collaboration with physicians.
  • Educate patients and families on pregnancy, childbirth, newborn care, and reproductive health to promote informed decision-making.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed medical records, comply with regulatory requirements, and participate in quality improvement initiatives.
Skills

The Certified Nurse Midwife utilizes advanced clinical skills daily to assess, diagnose, and manage the health of women during pregnancy and childbirth, ensuring safe delivery outcomes. Effective communication skills are essential for educating patients and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to coordinate comprehensive care plans. Critical thinking and problem‑solving abilities enable the CNM to identify potential complications early and implement appropriate interventions.

Proficiency with electronic health records and telehealth technologies facilitates accurate documentation and expands access to care. Additionally, cultural competence and empathy are vital in building trust and providing patient-centered care that respects individual values and preferences.
