Position: Social Studies Teacher -Grade 6 - Long Term Substitute (8 week position)
JOB GOAL:
To develop in each student an appreciation of American ideals and cultural heritage; to develop proficiency in the use of social studies inquiry skills and concepts; to motivate each student to understand and exercise the rights, privileges, and responsibilities of citizenship; to develop understanding of the geographical, historical, cultural, and political factors that influence the development of world regions; and to encourage students to develop sound opinions based on study of facts concerning operation of political and economic system.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

I.Demonstrates currency in the curriculum.

A.Demonstrates a working knowledge of the core curriculum for Middle School social studies.

B.Frames curriculum around key learning standards/concepts that provide opportunities for reasoning, logic, analysis and synthesis when planning units, lessons, and assessments.

C.Keeps current in the various content fields and applies that knowledge to the instructional program.

D.Contributes to the ongoing evaluation of the curriculum.

II. Conducts effective planning and assessment of curriculum and instruction

A. Effectively plans instruction and assessment in Social Studies and monitors student's understanding of the curriculum. Adjusts instruction, materials, or assessments when appropriate.

III.Manages the classroom environment and creates an atmosphere that is positive for student learning and involvement in Social Studies.

IV. Delivers instruction effectively.

A. The teacher makes learning goals of Social Studies clear to students and uses appropriate instructional techniques.

B. The teacher uses a variety of teaching strategies, including cooperative, peer and project-based learning; audio-visual presentations, lecture, discussions and inquiry, practice and application; and the teaching of others.

C.The teacher uses questioning techniques appropriate to Social Studies.

D. The teacher evaluates, tries innovative approaches, and refines instructional strategies, including the effective use of technologies, to increase student learning and confidence to learn.

V. Promotes and communicates high standards and expectations in Social Studies for student achievement.

VI. Promotes equity and appreciation of diversity and strives to ensure equitable opportunities for student learning.

A.The teacher demonstrates an appreciation for and sensitivity to the diversity among individuals.

VII. Fulfills all professional responsibilities

A. Cooperates in interactions with parents and receptive to their contributions.

B. Shares responsibility for accomplishing the goals and priorities of his/her grade/team/department, building and school district.

C.Exercises reflection on teaching and education and embraces the concept of continuous learning.

VIII.Completes any other duty or assignments as directed by the Principal or Content Coordinators. Social Studies.
