POSITION TITLE: PARA EDUCATOR
DEPARTMENT: Bristol Eastern High School
REPORTS TO: Special Education Teacher
SUMMARY: Assist in small group and individual pupil instruction.
RESPONSIBILITIES- Assist students with instruction under the direction of the special education teacher.
- Assist teacher in maintaining discipline.
- Assist teacher with instructional activities.
- Escort students from room to room.
- Assist students with toileting as required.
- Work with both special education and regular students.
- Assist teaching staff in implementation of IEP.
- Supervise students while at recess and lunch.
- Assist students with classroom assignments.
- Copy materials for instructional purposes.
- Assist teacher in filing material and preparing all necessary paperwork.
- Alert teachers to observed problems.
- Support students with toileting as required.
- PMT required.
Education and/or
Experience:
High School Diploma or General Education Degree. Two years of college credit or an associate’s degree (or higher), or successful completion of a paraprofessional assessment covering content knowledge in mathematics, reading, and writing.
Language
Skills:
Ability to read, comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos; write simple correspondence; effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group settings.
Mathematical
Skills:
Ability to add and subtract two‑digit numbers; multiply and divide with 10s and 100s; perform operations using American money and weight, volume, distance units.
Computer
Skills:
Basic knowledge and experience with job‑related computer hardware and software applications.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions; deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
Other
Skills and Abilities:
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and community; perform duties with awareness of district requirements and Board of Education policies.
The role requires sitting, speaking, hearing; standing, walking, climbing, balancing; stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling; pushing items up to fifty (50) pounds and occasionally lifting up to fifty pounds, with assistance for heavier lifting. Requires close, distance, and peripheral vision.
WORK ENVIRONMENTTypical classroom noise level; work throughout school building, on school grounds, and occasionally off campus. Responsible for safety and wellbeing of students in charge.
COMPENSATION & HOURSSalary: Per contractual agreement.
Work Hours: 6.5 hours per day (30‑minute break), 7:15 am – 2:15 pm.
Date of Service: ASAP.
