Job Description

TITLE: SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHER

JOB GOAL: To provide students who are working toward the educational goals of an Individual Education Plan the tailored programs, counseling and learning experiences they need to accomplish these goals.

Performance Responsibilities
  • Demonstrates currency in the curriculum.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of the core curriculum for Special Education.
  • Frames curriculum around essential questions that provide opportunities for reasoning, logic, analysis, and synthesis when planning units, lessons, and assessments.
  • Maintains current knowledge in the various Special Education fields and applies that knowledge to the instructional program.
  • Contributes to the ongoing evaluation of the curriculum.
  • Instruction and Assessment
  • Effectively plans instruction and assessment and monitors students’ understanding of the curriculum. Adjusts instruction, materials, or assessments when appropriate.
  • Classroom Management
  • Manages the classroom environment and creates an atmosphere that is positive for student learning and involvement.
  • Instruction Delivery
  • Delivers instruction effectively: makes learning goals clear and uses appropriate instructional techniques.
  • Utilizes a variety of teaching strategies, including cooperative, peer, project-based learning, audio-visual presentations, lecture, discussions, inquiry, practice, and application, as well as coaching others.
  • Uses questioning techniques appropriate to students’ ability.
  • Evaluates, tries innovative approaches, and refines instructional strategies, including effective use of technologies, to increase student learning and confidence.
  • Student Expectations and Equity
  • Promotes and communicates high standards and expectations for student achievement.
  • Promotes equity and appreciation of diversity, striving to ensure equitable opportunities for student learning.
  • Demonstrates appreciation for and sensitivity to the diversity among individuals.
  • Professional Responsibilities
  • Cooperates in interactions with parents and is receptive to their contributions.
  • Shares responsibility for accomplishing the goals and priorities of the grade, team, department, and school district.
  • Engages in reflection on teaching and education and embraces the concept of continuous learning.

  • Completes any other duties or assignments directed by the Principal.

    Job Requirements
    • MA Educator License, Teacher of Students w/ Moderate Disabilities, PreK-8 OR MA Educator License, Teacher of Students with Severe Disabilities, All OR MA Educator License - Mathematics.
    • Experience as a teacher of students with disabilities (preferably Autism Spectrum Disorder) in a substantially separate setting.
    • Experience or knowledge of Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks and MCAS/MCAS Alternate.
    • Knowledge and experience with Applied Behavioral Analysis and Discrete Trial instruction.
    • Willingness to pursue advanced special education training as directed by the Director of Special Education and Principal.
    • Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
