Veeco is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer to support the production of existing semiconductor capital equipment at our Somerset, NJ facility. This role is part of our Manufacturing Operations team and focuses on sustaining engineering, hands-on troubleshooting, and driving improvements that directly impact quality, consistency, and delivery. This position is ideal for hands-on, take-charge manufacturing engineers who enjoy working close to the hardware, collaborating with production teams, and solving real-world engineering problems in a low-volume, high-complexity manufacturing environment.

You'll be active on the shop floor, supporting complex electromechanical systems, helping ensure production runs smoothly day by day, and driving continuous improvement for future builds.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide hands-on manufacturing engineering support during assembly, integration, and final test
  • Troubleshoot and resolve mechanical and electrical hardware issues that affect quality, reliability, or delivery
  • Utilize structured problem-solving methods such as DFMEA, Fishbone, 8D, and failure analysis. Lead root-cause investigations and implement permanent corrective actions
  • Participate and support production-related design, manufacturing readiness, and tool risk reviews. Execute engineering changes, deviations, and rework in a production environment (SAP preferred)
  • Develop and maintain assembly instructions, work instructions, and technician training materials
  • Support suppliers and contract manufacturers on hardware-related production issues
  • Partner closely with Design Engineering, Quality, Operations, Service, and Supply Chain to prevent repeat factory and field issues
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts focused on manufacturability, repeatability, and product quality, including operational efficiency to improve quality and contain costs
  • Work directly in a manufacturing and test environment, supporting multiple build projects as needed

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related discipline
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in manufacturing, sustaining, or hardware support engineering
  • Experience supporting existing production lines for complex electromechanical products, low-volume, long-lead, and engineer-to-order manufacturing strongly preferred
  • Strong hands-on troubleshooting skills with strong mechanical engineering and solid foundational electrical engineering knowledge
  • Ability to read and interpret drawings, schematics, 3D models, BOMs, and technical documentation, including GD&T
  • Ability to generate/create process documentation, including Sequence of Operations, Method Instructions, and Technician Training Materials
  • Comfortable working directly on the manufacturing floor and collaborating with all levels, including technicians and operators up through plant-wide management
  • Experience with semiconductor capital equipment or similarly complex systems, including work in vacuum environments, cleanroom manufacturing, or contamination-controlled hardware, is strongly preferred
  • Engineering change control and deviation management in production ERP systems, SAP preferred
  • Supporting suppliers or contract manufacturing partners
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact at all levels
