Position SummaryThe Somerville Public Schools Department of Music & Theatre Arts seeks a stage director for Highlander Theatre Company’s Spring 2027 musical. The Highlander Theatre Company is an all-inclusive musical opportunity for SHS students in grades 9-12 which rehearses Dec 2026-March 2027 and is performed at Somerville High School in April 2027.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities- Participate in the selection and execution of a musical in collaboration with the Musical Director, Theatre Arts faculty and K-12 Supervisor of Music & Theatre Arts
- Participate in inclusive casting workshops in partnership with the Musical Director and Theatre Arts Faculty; utilize a culturally conscious approach to assign performance roles.
- Develop and communicate a clear directorial concept to student designers and producing partners.
- Run all after school rehearsals (typically select weekdays, September through December) in collaboration with the High School Musical Director.
- Use culturally responsive and SEL based approaches to support student education through active theatre-making
- Maintain communication with families about student successes and upcoming performances.
- Prepare a dynamic and engaging weekend of performances that celebrates the diversity and creativity of SPS high school students.
- Work collegially with school teachers, staff and other Music & Theatre colleagues to improve the education of our students.
- Bachelors or higher level degree in Theatre, Theatre Education, or related field
- Demonstrated and recent experience in directing theatre and/or musical theatre with young people
- Strong communication skills, both oral and written
- Exemplary interpersonal communications skills that establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, parents and members of the community
- Experience in teaching/directing in a multi-cultural and multilingual environment
- Commitment to changing lives through performing arts education
- Mobility: Frequent walking, standing, and navigating stairs.
- Lifting/Strength: Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry objects ranging from 10 to 25 lbs (e.g., books, supplies, equipment).
- Physical Dexterity: Bending, crouching, kneeling, stooping, and reaching to assist students.
- Stationary Tasks: Remaining in a stationary position (sitting/standing) for long periods.
