Position Summary

The teacher in Somerville Public Schools maintains the safety, care, and wellbeing of the students they are charged with. They have an understanding of child and youth development and provide opportunities for learning and social and emotional development following the standards, scope, and sequence for grade level and content areas. The teacher holds high expectations for each student and uses differentiated instruction to ensure equitable and meaningful access to the curriculum.

The essential functions or responsibilities listed below illustrate the various types of work that may be performed. Omission of specific duties does not exclude them if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment.

• Plans units and lessons and delivers instruction aligned to State standards and district curriculum.
• Provides ongoing formative and summative assessments and analyzes data to determine learning needs.
• Adapts curriculum and instruction to meet varied learning strengths and needs.
• Establishes and maintains culturally responsive two‑way communication with parents, guardians, and caregivers.
• Collaborates with educators to deliver specialized instruction and social‑emotional support per student needs.
• Follows guidance of the School Principal and district administrators to maintain a safe, welcoming, culturally affirming, and equitable learning environment.
• Participates in professional growth, reflects on practices, and incorporates new methodologies into planning and delivery.
• Additional duties as assigned by Principal/Supervisor and the SEU Collective Bargaining Agreement.

• Appropriate Department of Elementary and Secondary Educator’s license in the field or subject for this position.
• DESE SEI endorsement required.
• Elementary and ESL license required.
• Bilingual educator preferred.

• Mobility: frequent walking, standing, and navigating stairs.
• Lifting/strength: ability to lift, push, pull, or carry objects ranging from 10–30 lbs.
• Physical dexterity: bending, crouching, kneeling, stooping, and reaching to assist students.
• Stationary tasks: remaining in a stationary position (sitting/standing) for long periods.
