Job Description

Position Summary

The Para Educator/Math Teacher will be primarily responsible for raising the Math levels and preparing Para Educator students to pass the Math portion of the Para Pro test. The Math Teacher will serve a class of approximately 20-25 adult students. Students range in age and previous education;
English is a second language for some students. Students are working toward earning the Para Pro credential that will lead to employment as a Para Educator in a school district. The Math teacher is responsible for teaching a range of Math topics. Experience teaching Math to adult learners and explicit Math strategies is mandatory.

This program is a collaborative effort of the Reading/Writing Teacher and the Math Teacher. Both teachers meet weekly to plan and implement the curriculum, discuss student matters, and provide support to ensure program completion. The teacher also collaborates closely with the Director and Program Administrator to meet program goals, collects and submits attendance records, documents student progress, and assists with DESE-related activities.

  • Prepare lesson plans, select appropriate materials, and submit one lesson plan per month, following the ABE Department’s Curriculum Guidelines and MA DESE College and Career Readiness Standards.
  • Meet weekly with the Reading/Writing Teacher to plan, implement and monitor the Para Educator curriculum and provide individualized support.
  • Attend and participate in monthly staff meetings, department meetings and appropriate in-service workshops.
  • Evaluate student progress and make placement recommendations as required by department policy/procedures.
  • Complete attendance and assessment-related activities as required by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE).
  • Work effectively with other teachers, counselors, the program administrator, and Director on student and program issues.
  • Follow department policy/procedures regarding substitutes and substitute lesson plans and integrate digital literacy into instruction, including use of Aztec software for additional practice.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Abilities, & Skills
  • Bachelor’s Degree;
    Master’s in Math or Adult Basic Education preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years ABE classroom teaching experience, including at least one complete year teaching adult immigrants.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of learner-centered teaching approaches and effective integrated skills activities.
  • Massachusetts Teacher Certification a plus.
  • MAPT certification preferred but not required.

Weekly

Schedule:

3 mornings per week, 6 teaching hours, 1.5 preparation hours, monthly meetings on the third Thursday, 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. Salary shall be commensurate with education and experience, in accordance with the Somerville Educator's Union collective bargaining agreement.
