Position Summary

The Pre-Vocational Math Teacher Evening will be primarily responsible for raising math levels and preparing adult students to enter the HVAC training program  teacher will serve a class of approximately 20-25 adult learners, many of whom are English language learners, and will instruct a range of math topics. Experience teaching math to adult learners and training in explicit math strategies is required.

The teacher collaborates closely with the Director and Program Administrator to meet program goals, and must collect and submit attendance records, document student progress, and assist with DESE-related activities.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities
  • Prepare lesson plans and select appropriate materials following ABE Department’s Curriculum Guidelines and MA DESE College and Career Readiness Standards; submit one lesson plan per month.
  • Meet weekly with the Reading/Writing Teacher to plan, implement, and monitor the Para Educator curriculum and provide individualized support to students.
  • Attend and participate in monthly staff meetings, department meetings, and appropriate in-service workshops.
  • Evaluate student progress and make placement recommendations as required by department policy/procedures.
  • Complete attendance and assessment-related activities required by DESE.
  • Work effectively with other teachers, counselors, the program administrator, and Director on student and program issues.
  • Follow department policies regarding substitutes and substitute lesson plans, and integrate digital literacy into instruction, including using Aztec software for additional practice.
Qualifications, Knowledge, Abilities & Skills
  • Bachelor’s Degree;
    Master’s in Math or Adult Basic Education preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years ABE classroom teaching experience, including at least one complete year teaching adult immigrants.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of learner-centered teaching approaches and effective integrated skills activities.
  • Massachusetts Teacher Certification a plus.
  • MAPT certification preferred but not required.
Physical Requirements
  • Mobility: frequent walking, standing.
  • Lifting/Strength: ability to lift, push, pull, or carry objects ranging from 10 to 20 lbs.
  • Physical Dexterity: bending, crouching, kneeling, stooping, and reaching to assist students.
  • Stationary Tasks: remaining in a stationary position (sitting/standing) for long periods.
