Role Description
This full-time, on-site Assistant Director/Pedagogista role is based at Open Center For Children in Somerville, MA. The position supports the Director in daily center operations, including coordinating classroom schedules, overseeing program logistics, and ensuring adherence to licensing and safety regulations. The Assistant Director/Pedagogista collaborates with educators to design and refine curriculum, facilitates reflective practice, and promotes a child-centered, inquiry-based approach to learning.
Responsibilities include mentoring and coaching teachers, organizing staff meetings and professional development, and fostering strong communication with families through conferences, newsletters, and community events. The role also involves maintaining documentation of children’s learning, supporting enrollment processes, and contributing to a positive, inclusive, and culturally responsive school environment.
- Background in early childhood education, child development, or a related field, with a strong understanding of developmentally appropriate practice.
- Experience in curriculum design, pedagogical leadership, or Reggio-inspired approaches, including skill in observation, documentation, and reflective practice.
- Leadership and supervisory abilities, including coaching educators, supporting team collaboration, and contributing to staff development.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to build trusting relationships with children, families, and colleagues.
- Organizational and administrative skills, including scheduling, record-keeping, and familiarity with licensing and health and safety requirements.
- Commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally responsive education, with the ability to support diverse children and families.
- Comfort working on-site in a classroom and office environment, engaging directly with children and educators throughout the day.
- Preferred:
Degree in Early Childhood Education or related field; prior experience as a lead teacher, pedagogista, or assistant director; fluency in more than one language is an asset.
