Job Description

Position Summary

The Somerville Community Schools Program provides After School and Out of School Time Care in the Somerville Public Schools. We operate After School programs from dismissal until end of program including early release days; full day programs during school vacation weeks and during summer. It is our mission to provide high quality, affordable, Out of School Time Care to Somerville children in grades Pre-K through 8

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

The essential functions or responsibilities listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may be performed.   • Lead small and large group activities by following the curriculum provided by Site Coordinator
  • Follow Lead Teacher’s daily schedule
  • Travel to multiple sites as needed depending where a substitute is needed
  • Supervise and interact with children in a positive supportive manner
  • Assist in maintaining a relaxed, supportive atmosphere in the classroom
  • Discipline children in accordance with Community Schools Staff Handbook
  • Follow program health and safety procedures as stated in Staff Handbook
  • Assist in maintaining classroom environment including daily set up and clean up
  • Build positive relationships with families and co-workers
  • Maintain classroom cleanliness and organization
  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications and Skills

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum one year experience working with school age children including three months supervised experience with a school age children

Substitutes will lead an academic/homework block, enrichment block, and free block between 2:35pm (1:45 Pre-K) and 5:30 or 1:00 (12:00 Pre-K) and 5:30 on early release day under the direction of the Site Director or Assistant Site Director The substitute may also assist a lead teacher or support students individually if needed.

  • Mobility:Frequent walking, standing, and navigating stairs.
  • Lifting/Strength:Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry objects ranging from 10 to 30 lbs (e.g., books, supplies, equipment).
  • Physical Dexterity:Bending, crouching, kneeling, stooping, and reaching to assist students.
  • Stationary Tasks:Remaining in a stationary position (sitting/standing) for long periods.
