Your Impact:

Software is at the center of our product development, as it bridges the transition from digital models to beautiful physical form in 3D printing. In addition to the software we ship to our customers, there is software everywhere behind the scenes  have custom tools that allow our engineers to study and improve printer performance, as well as for calibration, manufacturing, and data analysis.

As a Python software intern, you’ll work at the intersection of hardware and software, developing critical functionality that enables us to build the best professional 3D printers on the market.

Internship Term: Fall 2026 (September 14 through December 18, 2026)
Commitment: Full-time (40 hours/week)
Location: Onsite in Somerville, MA (in-person)

What You’ll Do:
  • Develop and maintain advanced software tools to support calibration, validation, and rigorous testing of electromechanical and robotic systems across our product lines.
  • Manage requirements and set expectations with cross-functional teams—including hardware, mechanical, and manufacturing engineers—to deliver testing solutions successfully and on time.
  • Perform hardware modifications to printers and test setups to facilitate experimental processes.
  • Own the full lifecycle of the test tools ecosystem, including design, validation, documentation, deployment, and ongoing maintenance.
  • Use data science to analyze production lines and provide insights to the operations organization.
  • Continuously improve our development and deployment processes to streamline software releases across our global factories.
About You:
  • Experience developing applications using Python, SQL and Linux.
  • Strong understanding of software integration with embedded systems and engineering of complex electromechanical systems.
  • Have a knack for creative solutions to difficult real-world problems.
  • Ready to take features from initial concept through design and implementation.
  • Experience with robotics and Linux.
  • Bonus: experience working in manufacturing.

Compensation

Interns at Formlabs are paid on a bi-weekly pay schedule. The pay range for this role will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, location and expected impact on the organization. This is a salaried role, so you will always be paid based on the assumed 40 hours per week as a full-time intern. This position does not offer housing or relocation assistance.
