Role Overview

The Milieu Counselor is a vital member of the multidisciplinary team, providing safe, structured care to patients in crisis within an inpatient psychiatric setting. Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, they perform nursing tasks, monitor patient vital signs, assist with activities of daily living, and maintain the therapeutic milieu to promote recovery.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver nursing care, including vital sign measurement, documentation, and patient observation.
  • Assist patients with nutritional, hydration, elimination, and personal care needs.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, contribute observations, and implement care plans.
  • Maintain safety through unit checks, emergency procedures, and adherence to safety protocols.
  • Lead and co-lead therapeutic groups, organize activities, and support patient engagement.
  • Ensure compliance with policies, including confidentiality, restraint procedures, and trauma-informed care principles.
  • Contribute to quality improvement initiatives and maintain a safe, clean environment.
Qualifications & Skills
  • High school diploma required; higher education preferred.
  • Current BLS certification; training in physical restraint and trauma-informed care.
  • Experience in human services or healthcare is preferred.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, observation, and documentation skills.
  • Ability to respond effectively in emergency situations and maintain safety standards.
