The Systems Engineer II is responsible for designing, deploying, maintaining, and supporting critical IT infrastructure that enables research computing platforms across Mass General Brigham, and plays a key role in ensuring the operational efficiency, reliability, and scalability of infrastructure supporting High Performance Computing (HPC) systems, Trusted Research Environments (Research Enclaves), enterprise storage services, and other technical platforms that are part of the Digital Research Operations services to the MGB research community.
The position focuses primarily on storage, network, and hypervisor infrastructure engineering. The engineer will work closely with infrastructure teams, researchers, and platform engineers to design, deploy, and operate infrastructure services that support advanced scientific workloads.
In addition to engineering responsibilities such as architecture reviews, infrastructure deployment, and operational improvements, this role includes a user-facing component, requiring responsiveness and effective communication with researchers and technical stakeholders.
Qualifications
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
* Design, deploy, and maintain storage and network infrastructure supporting research computing environments, including HPC systems and Trusted Research Environments.
* Implement and maintain enterprise storage platforms supporting high-performance research workloads.
* Design and maintain network infrastructure supporting research computing platforms, including high-performance networking environments.
* Support hypervisor infrastructure used for research platforms and supporting services.
* Deploy and maintain infrastructure both on-premises and in cloud environments.
* Participate in architecture reviews and infrastructure planning for new research platforms and services.
* Troubleshoot infrastructure issues across compute, storage, networking, and virtualization layers.
* Develop and maintain automation for infrastructure provisioning, configuration management, and operational workflows.
* Monitor infrastructure systems and respond to operational incidents to ensure platform availability and reliability.
* Provide technical consultation and infrastructure guidance for research initiatives and platform deployments.
* Coordinate with vendors and internal infrastructure teams to troubleshoot, provide support, and escalate when necessary.
* Support provisioning processes, including infrastructure acquisition, deployment, and lifecycle management.
* Communicate effectively with research users and stakeholders to support infrastructure needs and resolve technical issues.
