Job SummaryResponsible for ensuring the safety of patients, visitors, and staff by patrolling the premises, monitoring security systems, and responding to security incidents.
Essential Functions- Conduct regular patrols of the healthcare facility, including interior and exterior areas, to detect and deter security breaches, vandalism, theft, or any suspicious activities.
- Maintain a visible presence and provide a sense of security by being approachable and proactive in addressing security concerns.
- Monitor surveillance cameras, alarm systems, and access control systems to identify potential security threats or breaches.
- Report any security-related incidents, hazards, or policy violations promptly to appropriate personnel.
- Control access to the facility by verifying identification, issuing visitor passes, and ensuring that only authorized individuals enter designated areas.
Education:
High School Diploma or Equivalent required. Experience in security operations, preferably in a healthcare or similar setting. 2-3 years preferred. Class D Passenger Vehicle Driver's License.
Skills and Abilities
- Strong observation and situational awareness skills to identify potential security threats or hazards.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively interact with individuals at all levels, including patients, visitors, and staff.
- Ability to remain calm and make sound judgments in high-pressure situations.
- Basic knowledge of emergency response procedures and first aid techniques.
- Familiarity with security systems, such as CCTV, access control, and alarm systems.
- Physical fitness and the ability to walk or stand for extended periods.
- Physically must lift 50 pounds, stand or walk for a minimum of 8 hours, run to any emergency within the hospital, and verbally or physically control an emergency situation if necessary. Strong sight and hearing needed. Ability to use appropriate force to subdue, arrest or restrain someone if necessary.
- Ability to receive instruction and communicate appropriately while moving to and from emergent situations.
- Ability to withstand adverse weather conditions.
- Exposure to chemicals, blood, and hazardous waste materials.
- Ability to assist in evacuation procedures including the use of Med Sleds or comparable equipment from any floor of any MGH building.
- Ability to perform all required practical training components including CPR, MOAB, OC Spray and handcuffing and physically carry out tasks while on duty if required.
- Each officer must perform each task in the functional assessment within the first 90 days and annually.
- 3 Minute Step Test – Measures heart rate after a 3‑minute stepping exercise. Instructions:
Stand with the step in front of you, step up and down in cadence with a metronome for three minutes, then sit and record heart rate after one minute of rest. - Step, Bend, and Crawl – Measures mobility and coordination. Instructions:
Step over a hurdle, crawl under a table, step over a second hurdle, reverse the sequence, and repeat. - Stretcher Carry – Measures ability to assist lifting a stretcher. Instructions:
With a partner, stand at each end of a 150‑lb. stretcher, bend, grasp, lift, then lower it. - Pull and Drag – Measures upper body strength. Instructions:
Hold the belts and drag a 150‑lb. sled 10 feet across the room, then reverse. - Balance Walk – Measures balance. Instructions:
Walk along a 1‑inch wide tape from one end to the other, keeping each foot on the tape. - Stair Climb – Measures ability to climb stairs at a quick pace. Instructions:
Walk up four flights of stairs as fast as possible, then return down swiftly within 35 seconds.
