Job Description

The Family and Community Liaison supports school staff with family engagement efforts while conducting outreach to communicate school priorities and goals. In this role, you will partner with families to support student learning, involve them in school decision-making processes, and connect them with vital community resources and support services. By working closely with staff, families, and local organizations, the liaison helps build and maintain a school environment that is consistently welcoming and supportive for everyone.

The position reports directly to the School Principal and is supported by the Somerville Family Learning Collaborative. The Somerville Family Learning Collaborative, (SFLC), is the department of family and community engagement of the Somerville Public Schools.

Core Responsibilities
  • Welcome students and families while maintaining a supportive, resource-filled environment
  • Commit to providing and promoting equitable practices to ensure access for all families
  • Support school staff with ongoing two-way communication regarding student learning goals, school expectations, and academic progress for diverse families
  • Conduct targeted outreach in collaboration with SFLC to promote school-based and district-wide programs and events.
  • Provide equitable access by assisting parents and students with forms and registrations for various programs and supports
  • Coordinate with SPS Multilingual Services to schedule translation and interpretation for families as needed
  • Attend and support relevant family events and activities, collaborating with other Liaisons for school-based and district-wide programs
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned
Meetings and Engagement
  • Attend and participate in meetings as requested by school leaders
  • Attend and participate in SFLC weekly Team meetings and quarterly professional trainings
  • Attend and participate in cross-sector community meetings as needed
Community Partnerships and Support Services
  • Connect families with local resources and support referrals to community and City of Somerville programs
  • Collaborate with SFLC staff to connect families with food, clothing, and other essential resources
  • Support monthly school-based food markets

Qualifications and skills

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Portuguese; listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.
  • Proven experience working with diverse communities and a deep commitment to closing opportunity gaps and promoting equitable practices.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, with the ability to work effectively, collaboratively, and positively within a diverse team.
  • Basic computer computer skills, including email Google platform, basic spreadsheets, and databases.
  • Ability to work occasional flexible hours as needed, including occasional before-school hours, evenings, and weekends.
Position Type: Part-Time
Salary: $22,847 to $29,310 Per Year
