Position: 26-27 Mediator

Mediator Position

The Mediator is responsible for working with the Lead Mediator to provide mediation services to students and staff district-wide. The Mediator is also responsible in assisting the Lead Mediator to reach out to students, parents, teachers and other school personnel and provide training in the techniques of conflict mediation.

Essential Functions & Responsibilities

The responsibilities listed below reflect the primary duties of the position; the omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the role. Additional responsibilities that are similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position may be assigned as needed to meet program, legal, or operational needs.

  • Assist in processing mediation requests/referrals; scheduling mediations, coordinating and conducting mediation sessions, monitoring agreements, maintaining records, and issuing reports on services
  • Oversee and support peer mediators during mediation sessions
  • Assist in creating and delivering presentations regarding mediation and conflict resolution
  • In collaboration with the Lead Mediator, provide individual and small group services relative to mediation
  • In collaboration with the Lead Mediator, conduct and share research studies which determine the nature of conflicts and analyze factors attitudes and morale
  • Assist in the exploration of grant application
  • Along with the Lead Mediator, serve as a resource for Somerville Public Schools crisis situations and help coordinate professional mediator response as needed
  • In collaboration with the Lead Mediator, support K-12 mediation initiatives, and oversee peer mediation programming at SPS
  • In collaboration with the Lead Mediator, coordinate with community agencies and others with related responsibilities
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned

Qualifications, Knowledge, Abilities, & Skills
  • Mediation Certificate required. Must be a trained mediator
  • Bachelor's degree in Conflict resolution, Counseling, Social Work, or related field preferred
  • Specific coursework/training in conflict resolution and/or mediation
  • Bilingual ability desirable
  • Ability to function independently
  • Attention to detail and ability to prioritize multiple projects is essential
  • Proven communication and effective interpersonal skills required
  • Should demonstrate leadership qualities and effective consensus skills
