Job OverviewDetermines the suitability of whole blood and apheresis blood component donors and patients according to established standards. Collects and processes blood components and therapeutic products from suitable donors and patients using automated and non-automated procedures. Possesses knowledge of blood collection theory and practice to diagnose, educate and treat donor, patient, and staff responses to actual or potential problems.
Responsibilities- Collects blood and blood components from suitable donors and patients using automated and non-automated procedures.
- Monitors established quality control procedures on analytical tests, equipment, reagents, etc.
- Evaluate results of quality control and implements corrective action when indicated.
- Operates, calibrates, conducts performance checks and maintains clinical laboratory instruments in section.
- Recognizes and corrects basic instrument malfunctions; may have to refer serious malfunctions to supervisor.
- Under the direction and supervision of a Therapeutic Apheresis RN performs therapeutic apheresis procedures and HPC collections.
- Performs procedures in a safe and professional manner to minimize donor/patient discomfort and incomplete procedures.
- Adheres to all FDA, NJDOH, AABB, FACT and Blood Services guidelines to ensure patient and donor safety and product acceptability.
- Correctly assigns each donation a unique number and collects requested laboratory specimens for testing.
- Projects a professional and pleasant manner to make the patient/donor relaxed and at ease.
- Provides observation and post-procedural care to recognize unstable situations and intervene appropriately.
- Releases donors and patients only when they appear in satisfactory condition.
- Documents all procedures and data in BCIS, run sheets, and apheresis forms in a timely manner.
- Communicates effectively the need for blood products to potential designated and volunteer donors over the telephone.
- Schedules donors as directed when assigned to Donor Recruitment.
- Interacts with families, employees and visitors about the need for volunteer blood donations.
- Monitors patients and donors carefully and is able to recognize and intervene in unstable situations or donor reactions.
- Under the direction of an RN, administers appropriate care to minimize donor/patient reaction signs and symptoms.
- Documents all donor and patient reactions appropriately.
- Summons nurse and/or physician immediately for severe donor reactions or questions about donor condition prior to release.
- Educates designated and volunteer donors about multiple component donations.
- Converts donors to multiple product donations.
- Schedules their next appointment before leaving the blood services using eDonor.
- Receives, verifies, and signs for incoming supplies, as required.
- Prepares components from whole blood and apheresis procedures according to Blood Services protocols so components are prepared promptly after donation.
- Whole blood and blood components are promptly stored in proper storage areas within established time frames.
- Accurately records all required data in BCIS and manual logs.
- Demonstrates flexibility and initiative, and willingness to take on additional assignments or hours when requested.
- Understands the duties of other comparable positions in the department; cross-trained for coverage when needed.
- Continually assesses Blood Services systems and suggests positive changes.
- Maintains knowledge through internal/external seminars, journals, and self-study materials.
- Adheres to RWJUH Culture of Kindness values and maintains good rapport with patients, donors, physicians, peers and coworkers.
- Exhibits friendly and helpful behavior; respects donor privacy.
- Frequent interaction with donors, patients and Blood Services personnel; occasional contact with physicians and other medical staff.
- Follows safety, security, life safety, and infection control policies; attends mandatory in-services.
- Complies with Standard Precautions and safety practices; reports hazards and maintains clean/workable environment.
- Properly disposes biohazard waste; uses PPE; cleans spills with approved agents.
