Job Description
  • Responsible for accurate pre-analytic processing of laboratory specimens and ensuring delivery of those specimens to the appropriate laboratory section.
  • Handling of biohazardous and infectious material while following proper safety precautions.
  • Assisting client services and technical associates in resolving specimen quality and integrity concerns.
  • Performs additional tasks as requested by Chairman of Pathology or designee.
Qualifications
  • Required: High school graduate or equivalent, basic computer skills, strong customer service and teamwork skills, must be able to communicate effectively and clearly in English.
  • Preferred: Two or more years of related phlebotomy or clinical laboratory assistance experience.
  • Preferred: Accessioning experience.

Essential Functions
  • Works in clinical laboratory and patient care areas.
  • Continuous exposure to blood and body fluids, infectious patients, chemical agents, and hazardous waste.
  • Follows all safety policies regarding safe handling and disposal of specimens, chemicals, biohazardous materials and sharps.
  • Adheres to Infection Control practices and procedures.
  • Maintains a clean and safe work environment and maintains patient and professional confidentiality.
  • Completes mandatory education in a timely manner.
  • Participates in ongoing education, such as in-service, continuing education, etc.
  • Ensure patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with medical regulations.
  • Covers Central Processing area as assigned.
  • Receives blood and non-blood specimens into the Laboratory Information System.
  • Evaluates specimen acceptability for further testing, such as making sure each specimen is properly labeled with patient information and test details, confirming stability, and confirming that specimens are collected in the appropriate containers with proper fill volumes according to test specific requirements.
  • Responsible for centrifuging, aliquoting, and distributing specimens to lab sections in a timely fashion.
  • Responsible for preserving specimen integrity and storing aliquoted, extra, and completed specimens in designated areas according to lab protocol.
  • Covers Send Out Testing area as assigned.
  • Receives blood and non-blood specimens into the Laboratory Information System and evaluates specimen acceptability for further processing and performs aliquots according to reference laboratory test requirements.
  • Maintains proficiency in the use of reference lab data terminals to look up test and specimen requirements.
  • Prepares electronic manifests for send out testing, packages and ships specimens at the appropriate temperatures in accordance with laboratory and federal regulations, and maintains an accurate and complete record of specimens sent out.
  • Review pending logs for specimens that have not been collected for tests ordered, and dispatch phlebotomists to pick up STAT and times tests.
  • Resolves discrepancies with technical lab staff, nursing personnel, physicians and other personnel.
  • Communicate any add-on requests with technical lab staff.
  • Review and transcribe paper requisitions into an electronic order within the LIS, when needed.
  • Responsible for operating and performing maintenance and troubleshooting automation equipment.
  • Maintains and cleans accessioning and procurement dispatch area and equipment, such as automation line, countertops, centrifuges, refrigerators, etc.
  • Communicates and cooperates with coworkers, hospital staff, patients, and visitors in a clear and courteous manner, exemplifying a culture of kindness.
  • Maintains a pleasant and professional demeanor when dealing with difficult situations.
  • Performs clerical and administrative duties, such as answering telephone in a timely manner, giving information according to the nature of the question and within hospital guidelines.
  • Maintaining files, typing, copying, binding, scanning reports, script verification etc.
  • Performs other support functions as assigned, including distribution of lab supplies, monitor, track, and replenish inventory to ensure optimal stock availability, and unpacking and restocking supplies in storage areas.
