Job Title: Unit Secretary
Location: RWJUH Somerset
Pay Range: $17.52 per hour
Pay Transparency: The above reflects the anticipated hourly wage range for this position if hired to work in New Jersey. The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate's educational background, skills and professional experience.
Job OverviewPerforms clerical and receptionist functions for the unit, in accordance with Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital policies and procedures, answers inquiries of a general nature by nursing staff, physicians, patients and families, and carries out principles of positive guest relations.

- Performs receptionist functions for the nursing unit in accordance with hospital policies: answering the telephone within 4 rings professionally, answering the call bell via intercom, activating the paging system for routine and emergency use, coordinating patient admissions, transfers and discharges with other departments, and maintaining positive guest relations.
- Uses the TDS computer system for written order entry, report retrieval, census updates related to admissions/transfers/discharges, and documentation of patient allergies, conditions, transport and diet.
- Accepts and schedules appointments for patients, photocopies medical records per policy, and maintains a log of unit activity.
- Follows RWJUH dress code, punctuality, mandatory annual training, unit meetings, use of , and patient confidentiality.
- Applies knowledge and skills related to the patient population served on the assigned unit.
- Demonstrates good communication and customer service skills as they relate to patients.
- Demonstrates awareness of patient safety initiatives and RWJUH safety standards and initiatives.
- Participates in Infection Prevention and at least one other patient safety initiative; adheres to RWJUH protocols and procedures.
- Demonstrates proper handwashing techniques and participation in unit infection prevention projects.
- Handwritten information is readable and adheres to documentation standards.
- Adheres to RWJUH Prohibited Abbreviations, Acronyms and Symbol listing.
- Reports errors, high-risk events and near-misses to the supervisor for follow-up.
- Completes online patient safety education with a score of 80 or higher.
- Demonstrates understanding of information communicated through newsletters, bulletin boards, and memos.
