As an Apheresis Technician, you will support the safe and efficient collection and processing of blood components through apheresis procedures. You will operate and monitor apheresis equipment, provide direct care and support to donors and patients throughout procedures, maintain accurate documentation, and work closely with nurses, physicians, laboratory professionals, and other members of the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, high-quality care.

A Typical Day For An Apheresis Technician May Include- Perform and assist with apheresis procedures for the collection of blood components, including platelets, plasma, and other designated products, in accordance with established policies and procedures.
- Prepare patients and donors for apheresis procedures, including verification of identification, review of required information, assessment of vital signs, and preparation of venous access.
- Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot apheresis collection equipment and related instrumentation to ensure safe and effective procedures.
- Monitor patients and donors throughout apheresis procedures for signs and symptoms of adverse reactions or complications and promptly communicate concerns to nursing staff or physicians.
- Respond appropriately to citrate reactions, hypotension, vasovagal reactions, equipment alarms, and other procedure‑related complications according to established protocols.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of apheresis procedures, patient and donor information, equipment activities, product collection, and adverse events.
- Ensure proper labeling, handling, storage, and transport of collected blood components and specimens in accordance with regulatory and organizational requirements.
- Perform equipment setup, disinfection, cleaning, quality checks, calibration support, and routine maintenance as required.
- Follow established procedures for equipment troubleshooting and promptly elevate equipment malfunctions or safety concerns.
- Perform required quality control activities and ensure compliance with applicable FDA, AABB, CLIA, CAP, and organizational standards.
- Maintain competency in apheresis procedures, equipment operation, emergency response, infection prevention, and patient and donor safety practices.
