PATH – Screening Field Interviewer

Job Overview

Westat is currently seeking motivated and detail‑oriented individuals with a commitment to excellence to serve as screening field interviewers on the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) study. The PATH study collects information on tobacco and nicotine use and examines the short‑ and long‑term health effects of such use on people in the U.S.

Interviewers will locate sampled addresses and screen household members for a longitudinal study. They will collect data via web and in‑person methods, transmit data via the internet, and report progress and costs to their supervisor. Interviewers must complete web‑based training and maintain regular communication with their supervisor.

Basic Qualifications: 18 years of age or older (or an emancipated minor) with the ability to enter binding confidentiality agreements. Must be available for 20–25 hours of web‑based training per week between August 3 and August 16, 2026 and communicate with your supervisor multiple times per week.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Live in or near the geographic work area defined by the project sample.
• Be available to work during the data collection period from August 17 to December 31, 2026.
• Work 20–25 hours per week, mostly evenings and weekends, 3 to 4 hours per session. Extra hours may be available.
• Local travel to complete project work will be required.
• Meet physical requirements: lift and carry 20 pounds of equipment; walk several blocks; climb a flight of stairs carrying equipment.
• Maintain regular, reliable telephone service with long‑distance calling.
• Maintain reliable, secure high‑speed internet at home.
• Have a fully insured, reliable vehicle that meets Westat’s minimum insurance coverage requirements.
• Hold a current, valid driver’s license that is not suspended.

• In‑person interviewing and/or cold calling experience.
• Experience working with the public.
• Effective communication across diverse socio‑economic groups.
• Comfort with laptop computers.
• Establish and maintain rapport with respondents.
• Comfortable working in unfamiliar locations, knocking on doors.
• Organized, detail‑oriented, self‑motivated.
• Ability to work independently and in a team with little supervision.
• Bilingual in English and Spanish encouraged.
• Willingness to travel overnight if needed.

Part‑time, variable‑hour, non‑exempt position eligible for overtime pay and potential production bonus at client discretion. Not initially eligible for health insurance or HSA; eligibility requires 1,560 hours of work from September to September and coverage begins January 1 of the following year. Hourly rate ranges from $21.16 to $25.70. Additionally, a weekly health and welfare payment of $5.09 applies, with possible reduction per benefit election.

Eligible for paid vacation and holiday leave based on hours worked. All field positions accrue sick leave and are eligible to participate in the 401(k) program (employer matching dependent on hours worked).
