The School of Education (SOE) at Sonoma State University prepares educators and leaders to support diverse learners and make a meaningful impact in schools and communities across TK–12 and beyond. Housed within the College of Education, Counseling, and Ethnic Studies (ECES), our programs integrate theory, clinical practice, leadership, and advocacy to strengthen schools and communities.
Students and program completers pursue careers in teaching, special education, school and district leadership, instructional coaching, community-based education, and equity-focused organizations, as well as advanced work in policy, curriculum, leadership, and higher education. We offer a Master of Arts in Education, Credential Programs, and Added Authorizations designed to support multiple pathways into the education profession.
Duties of the Position
Supervision of student teachers in the TK-grade 12 settings in the multiple, single and special education teaching credential programs. In addition, methods courses in some programs may be available to teach. Predominantly, this position is necessary for all field work and clinical practice requirements per CTC and specific programs.
-Supervisor duties vary within each credential program but generally include:
-regularly observe candidates in the field as they work with students and their mentor teachers
-communicate and collaborate with mentor teachers and other administrators when appropriate at the field site
-supporting candidates as they prepare submissions for state assessments whenever possible
-facilitating debrief sessions after observations with student teachers and others
-responding to and troubleshooting with student students teachers and their mentor teachers if and when concerns arise
-providing timely feedback to student teachers related to lesson planning, lesson implementation, and assessments
-supporting struggling student teachers as needed
-problem solving at the placement site
-in some programs, placing student teachers with qualified and effective mentors and support this relationship as needed in collaboration with the onsite principal and program's Placement Director
-conducting midterm and final evaluations of student teachers, typically held as a meeting between the mentor, student teacher, and supervisor, and completing required documentation associated with these evaluations
-attending regular, on-going supervisor meetings at the SSU campus whenever possible via zoom or face-to-face
-communicating with program coordinator and/or department chair as needed
-representing the University, School, Department and Program through approved interactions at field sites
Required Qualifications
- Master's degree in Education (or related field) required
- Teaching credential within the same program in which supervision would occur (e.g. multiple subject, single subject, educational specialist)
- Experience working with new teachers, teacher candidates/student teachers, or struggling teachers
- Experience working with diverse student populations
Preferred Qualifications
A minimum of 3 years recent experience working as a teacher or principal in public elementary school, or in teacher education. Ph.D. or Ed.D. in Education or specific content area (math, science, social studies, etc.), or related fields. Reading Certificate, Dual-Language Certificate, ELD Certificate, bilingual authorization, or equivalent (required). Valid CA teaching or admin credential; knowledge and experience in California School settings.
Rank and Salary
- Salary commensurate with degree level and experience.
- Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $5,507 - $6,677 per full-time month.
