Under the direct supervision of the Associate Director of Production at the Green Music Center, with additional lead work direction from show-related stage managers, the Performing Arts Technician provides live lighting, audio, and video support for a wide range of events including world‑class artist performances, touring companies, faculty–staff–student productions, and rental events. The incumbent also serves as a stagehand, assists with stage changes, and works frequently on nights and weekends, often past midnight.
Key Responsibilities- Provide live lighting support: set up and rig lights, wire and focus lights, and program/operate lighting consoles.
- Provide live audio support: wire the stage, patch audio, and assist with rigging and wiring both indoor and outdoor PA systems.
- Provide live video support: set up and operate video equipment and streaming devices.
- Set up amplified sound for live performances, rig gear, and handle professional audio & video recording.
- Manage load‑in, load‑out, setup & strike, utilizing lighting, video, and audio software and hardware for recording and post‑production.
- Serve as a stagehand and assist with stage changes before and during performances.
- Work variable schedules, including nights, weekends, evenings, and often past midnight; overtime, weekend, and evening hours are required as directed by the supervisor.
- Perform duties primarily at the Green Music Center but also at various locations on the Sonoma State University campus or at university events off‑campus, both indoors and outdoors.
- Ten (10) years of responsible experience providing live lighting, video, and audio services for indoor and outdoor concerts, live entertainment events, and performing arts organizations.
- In‑depth knowledge of lighting consoles and detailed experience with live lighting, video rigging, stage wiring and patching, projection screen rigging, drapery, power cable setup, and related equipment.
- Experience with stage etiquette is desired.
- Membership in professional audio/theatrical organizations is desired.
- Must successfully complete a pre‑placement exam.
This is a full‑time, exempt position that leads toward permanent status following a probationary period. Step placement will be determined based on relevant qualifications and professional experience, with an initial placement not expected to exceed Step 19 ($6,606). The CSU Classification Step Range for this position is $4,626 – $6,739 per month (Step 1 – Step 20).
