The City of Sonoma is seeking a highly qualified, dynamic, and enthusiastic candidate to fill the position of Permit Technician I/II in the Building Division of the Community Development Department.

This is an excellent opportunity to join a collaborative team serving a historic and vibrant community. The Permit Technician plays a key role in supporting development activity and serving as a primary point of contact at City Hall.

Under general supervision, this position performs a variety of technical planning and building support duties, including:

  • Reviewing and processing permits and entitlements for new construction, building modifications, and development applications
  • Serving as the first point of contact for the public at the front counter and by phone
  • Providing information regarding planning and building requirements
  • Calculating and collecting fees Routing plans for review
  • Preparing and issuing applications for new water connections and water customer accounts
  • Providing administrative support for meetings, including:
    • Preparation of agendas and meeting minutes
    • Scheduling and logistics coordination
    • Audio-visual setup and electronic meeting hosting
  • Supporting City Hall reception activities
  • Backing up and performing primary duties of the Administrative Assistant and Development Services Supervisor at the front counter
  • Performing related duties as assigned

This role requires excellent customer service skills, strong organizational abilities, and the capacity to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced public service environment.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate will possess:

  • Strong computer literacy and technical skills
  • Experience with electronic permitting and plan review systems
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills
  • Attention to detail and the ability to interpret regulations and procedures
  • The ability to work collaboratively and support multiple functions within the department
Minimum Qualifications Permit Technician I
  • Two years of increasingly responsible office support experience involving substantial public contact
  • Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade
Permit Technician II
  • In addition to the above, two years of planning and/or building permit review experience equivalent to that of a Permit Technician I in the City of Sonoma
Salary
  • Permit Technician I: $62,847.70 – $76,391.77 annually
  • Permit Technician II: $69,830.19 – $84,879.03 annually

Placement within the range is dependent upon qualifications and experience.
