Volunteer Contributor​/Reporter

Watch Duty is a non-partisan, non-government organization focused on disseminating public safety information in real-time from verified sources. Our mission is to publish only the facts that provide true situational awareness in case of emergency, without editorialization or prediction. We honor integrity and correctness over speed or sensationalism so we can build and maintain trust.

Reporters are responsible for gathering, verifying and utilizing information regarding wildfires. They monitor various sources including scanner traffic, fire cameras, user-submitted intel, official messages from agencies and automated bot detections provided by Watch Duty. Reporters collaborate and verify with one another and formulate an alert to send out to millions of people.

• A community spirit and the desire to help others in times of need
• Experience listening to emergency communications
• Experience reporting disasters, with an audience, on Facebook, Twitter, etc
• Ability to work in a team and collaborate in real-time on Slack (our internal messaging)
• The ability to multitask while dealing with high pressure situations
• A professional approach to disseminating vital information in a clear and concise manner

• Background in fire, dispatch, law enforcement, or first response
• Understanding of technology, radio scanners, software engineering, etc
• The willingness to assist with coverage outside your local area
