Job Summary

Provides oral hygiene and preventive services to dental patients, evaluates services, performs procedures safely in compliance with regulations under the direction of a dentist, prepares materials and equipment for treatment and has them ready for the dentist’s use.

Education & Work Experience
  • Associate’s/Technical Degree or equivalent combination of education/related experience:
    Preferred
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent (some certifications will require Bachelor’s):
    Preferred
Licenses & Certifications
  • Dental Hygienist licensure in the state of practice:
    Required
  • Radiation Safety Certificate:
    Required
  • Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification or Basic Life Support (BLS OR HS‑BLS OR RQIBLS) certification from approved vendor per AH policy:
    Required
  • AHA‑BLS or ARC‑BLS:
    Required
Essential Functions
  • Conducts patient screening procedures; such as assessment of oral health conditions, review of the health history, oral cancer screening, head and neck inspection, dental charting and taking blood pressure and pulse.
  • Takes and develop dental radiographs (x-rays). Removes calculus and plaque (hard and soft deposits) from all surfaces of the teeth. Applies preventive materials to the teeth (e.g., sealants and fluorides).
  • Teaches patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health (e.g., tooth brushing, flossing and nutritional counseling). Counsels patients about good nutrition and its impact on oral health.
  • Makes impressions of patients' teeth for study casts (models of teeth used by dentists to evaluate patient treatment needs).
  • Prepares patients for services, documents procedures and assists with other office management activities, i.e., scheduling patients, as needed.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.
