Job Description & How to Apply Below

The Department of Music and Sacred Music Program at the University of Notre Dame invites applications for a full-time faculty position in Voice, open rank and all voice types, beginning July 2027. Rank and appointment type will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. We seek an accomplished artist-teacher with a demonstrated record of excellence in performance and pedagogy who will serve as a collaborative partner in shaping the future of vocal studies at Notre Dame.

The successful candidate will value artistic excellence, intellectual curiosity, and stylistic versatility while preparing students to thrive in the diverse musical landscape of the twenty-first century. The successful candidate will teach both in the Department of Music, which offers undergraduate degrees in music, and in the Program in Sacred Music, which offers an interdisciplinary Master of Sacred Music degree. Both units collaborate across the university in interdisciplinary endeavors.

The new faculty member will support the development of vocalists as performers in ensembles, opera, oratorio, and recitals. Teachers with additional experience in teaching Musical Theater and Contemporary Commercial Voice are welcome to apply.

We Seek a Colleague Who
  • demonstrates excellence in teaching vocal technique informed by current voice pedagogy and voice science;
  • is comfortable teaching singers across a range of classical repertoire and stylistic traditions within vocal music, including (but not limited to) the Renaissance and Baroque eras, and contemporary vocal traditions;
  • is an accomplished performing artist with a developing or established national/international profile appropriate to rank;
  • values versatility and equips students with the technical and artistic flexibility required of today's professional musicians;
  • is committed to collaborative music making and mentorship; and
  • is excited to contribute to the continued growth and artistic vision of Notre Dame's voice program.
Responsibilities Include
  • teaching applied voice in the Sacred Music graduate MSM program, and in the Department of Music BA music major program;
  • teaching undergraduate and graduate courses consistent with the candidate's expertise, which may include voice pedagogy, vocal literature, lyric diction, opera, or related subjects;
  • recruiting and mentoring outstanding students;
  • maintaining an active profile as a performer, scholar, and/or creative artist appropriate to rank; and
  • participating fully in the intellectual and artistic life of the Department of Music and the Sacred Music Program.

A DMA or equivalent terminal degree is preferred, although candidates with an appropriate advanced degree and significant professional accomplishment will also be considered.
