The Primary School Special Education Teacher develops and implements IEPs, provides individualized instruction, and collaborates with general education teachers. They ensure compliance with special education regulations and foster an inclusive school culture.
Primary Responsibilities- Develop and implement IEPs that align with student goals and educational needs
- Deliver direct instruction, co‑teach in general education classrooms, and provide resource support
- Modify curriculum and provide accommodations to ensure student access and progress
- Monitor student growth and maintain accurate records for compliance and reporting
- Communicate regularly with students, families, and staff regarding progress and support strategies
- Collaborate with general education teachers, administrators, and related service providers
- Participate in IEP meetings, case conferences, and multidisciplinary team discussions
- Implement and support behavior intervention plans and positive behavior strategies
- Engage in professional development and remain current on best practices in special education
- Participate in school‑wide events, parent‑teacher conferences, and staff development sessions
- Contribute to student support initiatives, including tutoring, advisory, and intervention teams
- Encourage participation in extracurricular activities or clubs, as appropriate
- Collaborate in school committees or leadership teams focused on student success
Skills and Abilities
- Deep understanding of individualized instruction and legal compliance in special education
- Ability to build strong, supportive relationships with students and families
- Skilled in classroom management and behavioral supports
- Strong written and verbal communication and documentation skills
- Commitment to equity, inclusion, and cultural responsiveness
- Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
- Must demonstrate foundational professionalism, including consistent attendance, punctuality, adherence to school policies and procedures, and strong employability skills
- Valid Indiana teaching license in Exceptional Needs:
Mild Intervention (K–6) or equivalent - Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field
- Strong knowledge of IDEA, IEP development, and inclusive instructional practices
- Ability to differentiate instruction for a wide range of learning and behavioral needs
- Excellent organizational, communication, and collaboration skills
- Experience working with elementary students with diverse needs preferred
- Proficiency with data collection, progress monitoring, and instructional technology
Must demonstrate foundational professionalism, including consistent attendance, punctuality, adherence to school policies and procedures, and strong employability skills.
