General Description:

The High School Science Teacher is responsible for designing and delivering high-quality instruction in one or more scientific disciplines (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Environmental Science) to students in grades 9–12. This role includes planning engaging lessons aligned with state standards, using hands‑on experiments and inquiry-based learning to build scientific knowledge and critical thinking skills. The teacher supports all learners through differentiated instruction and plays an active role in promoting scientific literacy and academic success.

Qualifications:
  • Valid Indiana teaching license in Science (specific content area endorsements preferred)
  • Bachelor’s degree in Science Education or a related scientific field
  • Strong content knowledge in assigned science discipline(s)
  • Effective classroom management and instructional skills
  • Ability to differentiate instruction for diverse learners, including ELL and SPED students
  • Commitment to competency-based education and interdisciplinary collaboration
  • Experience working with high school students in diverse learning environments
Primary Responsibilities:
  • Design and deliver science instruction aligned with Indiana Academic Standards and the Portage School’s competency-based learning model
  • Create engaging, hands‑on lessons that emphasize scientific inquiry, real‑world application, and critical thinking
  • Use a variety of formative and summative assessments, offering multiple pathways for students to demonstrate mastery
  • Build a structured, inclusive, and relationship‑rich learning environment that supports student agency and ownership of learning
  • Collaborate with colleagues to design interdisciplinary, project‑based learning experiences aligned to content‑area learning standards and the Portrait of a Leader competencies
  • Integrate field experiences, community partnerships, and authentic science practices into learning experiences
  • Maintain accurate records of student learning, competencies achieved, and attendance, and provide clear, timely, and actionable feedback through our Headrush learning management system
  • Serve as a Wayfinder (Advisor) to approximately fifteen (15) students, supporting their academic planning, social‑emotional growth, and postsecondary exploration
  • Contribute actively to professional learning, school‑wide improvement efforts, and a positive adult culture
  • Participate in IEP/504 meetings and provide appropriate support for diverse learners
  • Manage classroom equipment and inventory responsibly, ensuring a safe and professional lab environment
  • Participate actively in professional learning, including collaboration with colleagues, participation in conferences and training, and contribution to the continuous improvement of instructional practice
  • Collaborate with colleagues on interdisciplinary, project‑based learning and support students in learning the “Portrait of a Leader” and related competencies and essential skills
  • Other duties as assigned by the Administration

  • Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and school‑wide initiatives
  • Attend and support school events such as open houses, science fairs, and parent‑teacher conferences
  • Sponsor or assist with extracurricular clubs, tutoring, or science‑related activities as needed
  • Support the mission of the Portage School of Leaders through active collaboration, reflection, and contribution
  • Serve on committees or contribute to school improvement efforts

  • Competency in the administration and interpretation of academic ability testing
  • Ability to use technology for documentation and preparation of professional materials
  • Ability to teach and assist students in the use of computer applications
  • Ability to communicate assessment results, in written and oral forms, to parents and professionals
