The Drescher Library Public Services Assistant oversees daytime library operations, hires, trains, and supervises student workers, and opens the library. This position works cooperatively with other departments in the library to provide excellent customer service, process library materials, and obtain faculty‑requested physical reserves.
This position also assists the Drescher Graduate Campus Librarian, the Librarian for Emerging Technology and Digital Projects, and the Making and Innovation Specialist with activities and initiatives at the Drescher Library iLab, an innovation lab geared toward graduate students and faculty.
In alignment with the University’s mission and strategic plan, The Drescher Library Public Services Assistant supports the learning, research, and teaching needs of faculty, students, and staff at the Drescher Graduate Campus located in Malibu, California.
Duties- Oversee daytime library operations, assist with iLab activities and initiatives, and manage circulation activities, including check‑out and check‑in procedures, print and electronic reserves, document delivery, and other patron‑initiated borrowing.
- Hire and supervise student circulation employees, including creating and maintaining student work schedules, keeping an accurate account of student employee hours, approving timecards, and evaluating performance.
- Process interlibrary loan materials and requests received through the Tipasa system.
- Assist with the maintenance of library collections and displays, planning and developing new displays and promotional materials for the library and iLab as needed.
- Advise students and faculty in the general use of library collections, technologies, and subject databases, recognizing when research questions need to be forwarded to the appropriate librarian. Assist in staffing the library's chat reference service.
- Explain library policies and procedures to patrons and determine the best course of action to resolve issues in a courteous and positive manner.
- Keep accurate and complete circulation, visitation, and usage statistics in Google Docs.
- Maintain library supply inventories, communicating inventory needs to the purchasing manager. Oversee public copy machines and network printers, calling for maintenance and service when necessary. Coordinate security and facility needs with Public Safety and DFS (Department of Facilities Services).
- Communicate with University faculty and assist in the ordering, processing, and maintaining the reserves and electronic reserves systems.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills and QualificationsRequired:
- Minimum of two years of college and prior customer service experience.
- An appreciation for and commitment to the university’s Christian mission and a desire to contribute actively to that mission.
- Demonstrated sound judgment and emotional intelligence; strong verbal and written communication skills; excellent computer, organizational, and communication skills, both oral and written.
- Ability to perform detailed work with frequent interruptions.
- Ability to work independently and as a team member.
- Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. and move loaded book carts.
- Needs to be flexible and adaptable.
- Committed to serving Drescher Library users and collaborating with colleagues in a manner that embodies the Libraries' core values.
- Proficiency with Google Workspace.
Preferred:
- Bachelor's degree.
- Prior library experience.
- Ability to anticipate patron needs and suggest workflow modifications to streamline processes and respond to patron needs.
- Experience with a library management system (LMS).li>
- Interest in emerging technologies and their application in an academic setting.
- Proficiency with Excel, Adobe Suite, web‑based design platforms such as Canva.
