Starting Pay: $16.50 per hour

Position Type: Full-Time

Working Relationship

Reports To: Principal, Intervention Specialist, Instructional Coach, Director of Title I

Basic Function

An instructional assistant works under the direct supervision of a certified teacher. The teacher plans the instructional assistant’s activities and evaluates student achievement. The assistant is required to work in close physical proximity to the teacher.

Required Experience or Training
  • Completed at least two years of study at an institution of higher education, an associate’s degree, or a passing score on the Para Pro Test.
  • Knowledge and ability to assist in instructing reading, writing, and math.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Proficient in reading and written language
  • Knowledge and willingness to operate computer programs
  • Use appropriate English
  • Responsible behavior record
  • Sensitivity to children with different ability levels and diverse racial, ethnic, or religious backgrounds
  • Ability to work with multiple students simultaneously
  • Positive attitude toward constructive criticism
  • Strong written communication with staff, parents, and administration
  • Patient, compassionate, and enjoys working with children
  • Familiarity with and adherence to school rules
  • Works well in a team and follows direction from certified teacher
  • Knowledge of developmentally appropriate strategies for children

Position Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate knowledge and application of effective instruction to assist teaching and learning as developed by the certified staff.
  • Use instructional techniques, data collection, and observation techniques.
  • Assist certified teacher in collecting data for needs assessment, student selection, desired outcomes, and evaluation.
  • Maintain adequate records on student work, personal data, and test scores.
  • Provide instructional support techniques as developed by the certified staff.
  • Apply small‑group instruction techniques for management and support of student learning.
  • Supply specific instructional techniques to support academic areas.
  • Work with individuals or small groups; monitor seatwork and keep students on task.
  • Assess student needs and create program opportunities to meet them.
  • Motivate and assist children and youth.
  • Use appropriate materials and modify as necessary.
  • Inspire a love of reading, language, and math skills; involve in reading stories and follow‑up activities.
  • Use technology to assist teaching and learning; assist students with technology‑driven lessons and assessments.
  • Understand technological equipment.
  • Communicate with colleagues, follow instructions, and use problem‑solving skills as an effective instructional team member.
  • Work under a certified teacher's supervision.
  • Communicate with parents professionally; may participate in parent conferences.
  • Collaborate with district staff and outside agencies as required; be available for open house, parent workshops, and special functions.
  • Maintain personal time cards and monitor student progress per teacher guidance.
  • Other duties may be assigned as needed.
