The ENL Specialist supports students with Language Plans to promote student learning, growth, and development. This position also builds teachers’ capacity to support English learners and elevate student achievement by providing professional development and coaching in content and pedagogy to support teachers in implementing best practices. The ENL Specialist supports and strengthens the mission of Saint Joseph High School to transform students in heart and mind, preparing them to serve God, the Church, and the world
Responsibilities
Meets with students and parents at least annually to review each student’s Individual Learning Plan (ILP).
Communicates and works with teachers to ensure that accommodations and supports are provided to students per their ILP and individual needs.
Builds relationships with students on his/her caseload, monitors their academic progress, and intervenes as necessary to support and improve student performance.
Assists the school test coordinator in administering the annual WIDA test.
Academic Support
Through push-in services in a general education classroom and pull-out services in a resource room/Basic Skills class, provides individual or small group instruction and academic support to students identified as English Language Learners as well as other students as assigned to his/her caseload.
Collaborates with the teachers and paraprofessionals on the SJHS Learning Strategies Team to coordinate the academic support provided to students and teachers, including leading professional development.
Teaches Basic Skills courses as assigned. May push-in to other courses for student support
Instructional Coaching
Provides professional development to teachers to learn and implement research-based best practices in instruction and assessment designed to elevate learning and achievement for English learners.
Conducts informal and non-evaluative classroom observations and provides feedback to teachers to support the implementation of best practices.
Uses achievement and observation data to identify professional development needs and make recommendations to the AP for Academics.
Professional Conduct
Helps maintain a school climate that is joyful, positive, welcoming, supportive, and inclusive; and supports the school mission to transform students in heart and mind to serve God, the Church, and the World.
Knows and meets all diocesan and school expectations for professional conduct, attire, and attendance and upholds all professional and contractual responsibilities both in the classroom and in assigned co-curricular responsibilities.
Works cooperatively with colleagues, supporting other teachers and staff.
Supports the mission of the school and Catholic teachings in their professional and personal actions.
Maintains appropriate confidentiality.
Is responsible for license renewal.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
Monitors student behavior in the halls during passing periods.
Is dedicated to continual professional growth through meetings, workshops, and in-services as well as professional organizations and literature. Attends scheduled faculty, department, and committee meetings.
Participates in scheduled special events, such as Faculty/Staff Retreat, Faculty/Staff Orientation, Back-to-School Night, Open House, Discover Saint Joe Day, Catholic School Mission Day, Curriculum Day, Baccalaureate Mass (optional), and Graduation.
Attends all liturgies and assemblies in assigned location and fulfills all assigned responsibilities.
Other duties as assigned.
Communication
Communicates proactively and in a timely manner with parents, teachers, counselors, administrators, and other personnel as needed to support student academic achievement and personal development. Returns phone messages and emails within 48 hours.
Serves as Bilingual Department Program Coordinator
Collaborates and coordinates with the Program Coordinator for Learning Strategies in support of all students.
Serves as a non-voting member of the Curriculum Committee
Serves as a member of the School Improvement Plan (SIP) Team
Serves on the Student Assistance Team (STAT) and collaborates with administration and counselors to support student academic achievement and personal development.
Reports to the AP for Academics.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred.
Holds a valid Indiana teaching license.
Certified or working towards certification in ESL, ENL, or TESOL in Indiana.
Secondary classroom teaching experience preferred.
