First Year Experience Program (sb-fysm-iusba)
Peer mentors in the First Year Seminar Program support first-year students academic and personal success as they transition from high school to college. This program creates opportunities for students to develop and apply their leadership skills in service to the university.
Department Specific Responsibilities- Participates in a summer professional development program for training as a peer mentor (August 10-12, 2026).
- Attends monthly training sessions during the semester (Fall 2026: dates TBD in consultation with peer mentor team).
- Makes up any missed training sessions in a timely fashion. Assist in training peer mentor colleagues.
- Attends First Year Seminar class each day or participate in activities associated with an online First Year Seminar. Model good student behavior.
- Facilitates small group discussions.
- Creates and gives presentations on topics related to college success.
- Interacts regularly with all students in the course. Chat with students before and after class (as your schedule permits). Plan to be in contact with all students at least once a month (via email, messaging or some other means).
- Provides advice and referrals to students as needed. Consult with faculty partner and/or FYS Director as needed.
- Meets with all students 1-on-1 by the end of the fifth week of class, unless another schedule for doing so is approved in consultation with the faculty partner and the FYS Director.
- Meets with students additional times as required by the faculty partner. Meet with students on an as-needed basis.
- Meets with FYS Director 1-on-1 in the middle of the semester (around Week
8) and at the end of the semester (finals week). - Meets regularly with the faculty partner.
- Completes tasks as assigned by the faculty partner.
- Responds to emails from the FYS Director, faculty partner, and other peer mentors in a timely manner.
- Consults with faculty partner (and FYS Director as needed) to address any problems in class.
- Holds 1 office hour per week. In consultation with the faculty partner and FYS Director, may decide to hold more than 1 hour per week if appropriate.
- Completes evaluation of the faculty partner at the end of the semester.
- Adheres to the Indiana University Code of Student Rights, Responsibilities, and Conduct.
Required
- Currently enrolled as undergraduate student at Indiana University South Bend.
- Completed at least 30 college credits with a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
- Completed an FYS or equivalent course.
